1. Watch 13 Scary/Horror/Halloween-Themed films, etc. from midnight October 1, 2024 through October 31, 2024 (use your own time zone to set the ending time).

2. Theatrically released films and short features count as 1 point each. Running times are irrelevant. TV specials (e.g. "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!") and individual episodes of anthology TV series (e.g. "The Twilight Zone") also count as 1 point each. For episodic TV series, 2 hour-long episodes (e.g. "The Walking Dead") count as 1 point and 3 episodes of 30 minute-long episodes (e.g. "The Munsters") count as 1 point.

3. Two of the 13 films, et. al. must be new discoveries, movies you've never seen before. The point of this is to see those few movies you've always meant to see, but never got around to. Please specify new discoveries in your film list by making them bold, adding asterisks, different colors, etc.

4. Come here and talk about 'em.

5. There is an uber-category, the Ultimate Splatter Challenge for those who wish to put all of the rest of us to shame. This is the heavyweight division. These people, if they choose to accept the challenge, must view 31 horror/scary/Halloween themed movies before dawn on Nov. 1st. Ten new discoveries are recommended for this one. The rest of us will bow down in awed reverence to these truly "Splatterific" HTF members. The bragging rights will be awesome and long lived. What movies qualify? If you wanna include it, go for it. There will be no hairsplitting. If The Wizard of Oz sends you to the dresser for a fresh pair of boxer shorts, all the power.

6. At the end of the challenge, the totals will be added up based on the point system outlined in number 2 above.

Got in a few more.

082 10/29 Murder Party (2007) 2.5/5 Satiric take down of the art world isn’t a bad idea, and really there isn’t anything wrong with this. It plays pretty tight and to Saulnier’s credit they play it pretty straight which is a good thing. Basically being a one location film makes sense as a first film, but it also means you're at the mercy of the performances and they mostly handle it. It just doesn’t quite kick up enough to really elevate it. It’s fine for what it is, but Saulnier goes on to make much better films. Watching the interview included on the blu-ray, this was basically designed to be a device to break through to better and bigger things, which means it did what it needed to do.

083 10/29 Dude Bro Party Massacre III (2015) 3/5 One of the rare dumb horror comedies that is actually quite funny. Mostly due to embracing its stupidity. It completely misses feeling like the lost 80s film it wants to be, but the cameos and rapid fire gags work for the most part. May not be for everyone, but it worked for me despite my natural dislike of this kind of thing.

084 10/29 The Fall of the House of Usher (2023) Ep5&6 Continues to be pretty solid, though admittedly these two episodes have been a little weak compared to the first four. Most likely due to having to start wrapping up the mystery with two episodes left. I’m still in it.

085 10/29 Revenge (2017) 3.5/5 Fargeat’s first feature film is a pretty fantastic thriller that looks a lot bigger and higher budget than I imagine it is. A great cast, and a fantastic lead in Matilda Lutz helps to carry it. Plot wise it gets a little ridiculous and unbelievable which can be a problem with these, but it’s packed with so much style I got wrapped up in the sequences and didn’t mind that aspect. It plays with themes that will really come to fruition with “The Substance”, and the massive level-up between these two films is really something. I’ve been meaning to watch this one for awhile, it did not disappoint and Fargeat is certainly someone I’ll be keeping my eye on.

First time watching this film. While staying at an isolated island resort, a young couple get involved with another couple who convince them to venture outside the resort compound. A tragic accident leaves them facing a zero-tolerance policy for crime: either you'll be executed, or, if you're rich enough to afford it, you can watch yourself die instead.

The film is a unique idea, and is filled with bizarre images and themes. It's definitely not your everyday horror / thriller.

October 30: The Thing (2011) - 4 out of 5

Norwegian scientists are excited about a discovery in the Arctic. To excavate what they’ve found, they enlist the expertise of an American, Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). Once retrieved and secured back at their base of operations, the frozen discovery breaks free and wreaks havoc. The unwittingly uncovered thing can absorb and mimic humans and could be the end of their team and everything.

2011’s The Thing is a direct prequel to the 1982 masterpiece, John Carpenter’s The Thing. Despite being a prequel, this film covers the same beats as Carpenter's classic. It also repeats some basic visuals beyond the puzzle pieces it introduces as direct connections to the 1982 film. Those puzzle pieces are fun for fans of the earlier film, and the closing moments snugly lead to the opening of the 1982 film, which makes watching the two films as a double bill worthwhile.

I tend to rate this movie better than its quality and effectiveness deserve. Unlike the ’82 film, this prequel is missing the sense of isolation, paranoia, and ambiguity, and using visual effects over practical effects (which the ’82 film is legendary for) is a significant drawback. Still, there is much to enjoy. The remote, frozen setting is effective, and the cast, led by Winstead, with Joel Edgerton, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Stik Henrik Hoff, and Kristopfer Hivju supporting, are well suited for their roles. Fortunately, despite some echoing, their characters aren’t merely updated copies of the earlier film, and while they aren’t as memorable as Carpenter’s collection, they do hold their own.

98. Friday The 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan

Jason comes back to life and hops on a cruise ship headed to New York City with a graduating high school class. A bad movie but it's still nostalgic fun for me.

99. A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984)

A burned man is killing teenagers in their dreams. An all time classic that created the biggest horror icon of the 1980's. It's wild that this movie is forty(!) years old now.

100. Scream (1996)

A masked killer stalks a girl and her friends on the one year anniversary of the murder of her mother. A great opening, likeable characters, suspenseful and an excellent blend of comedy and horror. I've loved this movie since the day it came out.

I'm gonna do my annual October 31 viewing of Halloween and Halloween II tomorrow (I already watched them in this marathon and won't count them again) so I'm not sure that I'll get any more movies but I'm happy to have hit 100.

🎃 The Final Girls (2015) 👻 👻 👻 1/2

Max (Taissa Farmiga) is struggling three years after the death of her mother in a car accident. In danger of failing out of college, Max accepts some academic help in exchange for attending a screening of Camp Bloodbath, an 80's slasher film in which her mother had a starring role. When an emergency in the theater sends the crowd fleeing, Max and her friends look for an exit backstage, stepping through the movie screen, but strangely find themselves inside the actual movie. Duncan (Thomas Middleditch), the slasher film fanboy, tells them they should relax as they just need to stay close to the "final girl" until the movie ends and nothing will happen to them. But when the final girl dies before the film is half over, they realize they're all now off-script and need to find a way to defeat the maniac stalking them as well as get back home.

I really enjoyed this film which falls into the same general area as Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, which I also loved. The film in the film, Camp Bloodbath, was largely a copy of Friday the 13th, but the overall production still seemed original as the characters tried to figure out the rules of the film while dealing with voiceovers, flashbacks, trying to keep clothes on the hot girl so they don't attract the killer (when boobs come out, he shows up  ), and the killer's sound effects announcing that he was nearby. A great cast in this, with Farmiga and Middleditch, as well as Alexander Ludwig, Adam Devine, Alia Shawkat, and Nina Dobrev.

This film also fit some pretty emotional moments amid the comedy and carnage, without being too sappy, as the friends reconcile past grievances and relationship angst, and Max finally has a chance to have some closure with her mother that she was denied three years ago. It all worked pretty well, mixing comedy, touching moments, and scary scenes. Also some great 80's songs in the soundtrack. A digital purchase on Vudu (possibly via FanFlix).

This has to be one of the most audacious horror trilogies ever made. Ti West really swung for the fences with each movie, which feel completely different from one another, and Mia Goth is never less than iconic.

While the first two shared a remote location in rural New Zealand and were shot back-to-back under significant restrictions imposed by the pandemic, this one is set in Los Angeles and shot in Los Angeles which lends a much more expansive feel. It's awash in sleazy excess set against the moral panic of the so-called "moral majority" in Reagan-era America.

After surviving the events of X and achieving significant success within the adult film industry, Maxine doesn't just walk through life -- she struts. Her desires are just as fierce as Pearl's were, but she has a much more realistic understanding of what it will take to achieve them. Throughout movies, Mia Goth has embodied both Maxine and Pearl at two very different junctures in their lives. The one common denominator is the way her presence grips the screen and doesn't let go.

And after being limited in casting by budget and the pandemic for the first one, this one piles on the stars: Kevin Bacon as a sleazy private investigator working for a shadowy and nefarious figure; Giancarlo Esposito as Maxine's talent agent who provides his client with an expansive range of services; Elizabeth Debicki as auteur who sees the sequel she's making to her surprise B-movie horror hit as a means to putting her vision on the screen; Bobby Cannavale and Michelle Monaghan as two LAPD detectives hunting the Night Stalker and perhaps another serial killer too; Lily Collins as the working class British actress who starred in the previous film and is happy as long as she gets enough work to keep her health insurance; Halsey as a fellow porn star and a vulnerable woman in the night; Moses Sumney as the clerk at the video store under Maxine's apartment; and Sophie Thatcher as the special effects artist responsible for the horror movie-within-the-movie's blood and gore.

I loved the style of this film, and the way it utilized the slightly empty quality of today's Los Angeles, where hardly anything gets shot these days, to create its eighties LA, which was the center of the universe west of the Mississippi.

The one area it fell short for me was in the pacing. Both X and Pearl feel like a boulder rolling down a cliff; they start slow and then steadily pick up more and more momentum until absolute insanity ensues. The desire to keep the (rather predictable) reveal about the identity of the copycat killer/Maxine's blackmailer a secret means that most of the movie pits Maxine against Kevin Bacon's sleazy Cajun henchman. The problem is that he doesn't feel like much of a threat, because Maxine is ahead of him every step of the way. The first two thirds of the movie are spent gradually taking us from first to third gear, and then we lurch right into fifth gear for the big finale.

But that's a minor complaint. This entire trilogy really plays for me.

The survivors reach the end of the Road. Jen Kale finds what she's looking for. Agatha makes an unchracteristic choice. Death makes an exception. Meanwhile, Teen comes to a realization about the nature of his recent experiences.

Flashbacks reveal the true origins of the Witches' Road. Agatha and the Teen come to an agreement. For whatever reason, I thought this was a close-ended miniseries. But the ending her practically begs for a follow-up in some form.

The Visitor (1979) ***

Ovidio G. Assonitis brought THE EXORCIST rip-off BEYOND THE DOOR to the big screen and people probably thought you couldn't get a more insane Italian rip but then we got THE VISITOR, which is pretty much a copy of THE OMEN, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, ROSEMARY'S BABY and even a little STAR WARS thrown in.

I'm really not sure what to say about this film except that it very well could be the greatest bad exploitation movie ever made. I mean, it's just rather amazing to see how many films this is "borrowing" from and at times it doesn't make any sense but at other times you can't help but be floured by what you're watching. What's even more incredible is how many famous faces show up here including Shelley Winters, Mel Ferrer, Glenn Ford, Franco Nero and John Huston. Hell, even Sam Peckinpah shows up playing an abortion doctor!

This is certainly a "must see" movie simply because of how crazy it is. The film is just so crazy that it's impossible not to be sucked in by everything going on.

Megan is Missing (2011) ** 1/2

This found footage film has been on my "to watch" pile for years. It basically tells the story of two 14-year-old friends who go missing. The film uses webcam, security cam and a video diary to tell their story and then the final 22-minutes are the found footage stuff where we see what happened to them.

This film became infamous because many called it one of the scariest movies ever made. I found the film to be disturbing but I'm not sure if it was because the film was good or if it was because I'm a human and realize that real people go through these horrors and you can't help but be disturbed by that. Again, we're dealing with very young girls here and there's a lot of sexual talk through the first hour and it was rather disturbing listening to it. I get the director was trying to be "real" but it just didn't really work. There's talk of a couple sexual assaults that were just as disturbing and again... is the movie "good" because of these disturbing scenes or is it just being human that I'm disgusted and disturbed by it? I had really mixed feelings on this film but it's worth watching just to see what impact it has on you.

97. Murders in the Zoo (1933) ▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲ - A monomaniacal zoologist is pathologically jealous of his beautiful but unfaithful wife Evelyn and will not stop short of murder to keep her.

With a rather gruesome pre-code opening scene this is one of Lionel Atwill's best with his character coming up with all manner of zoo related deaths for people who come too close to discovering his wife and the man who was hitting on her didn't die accidentally. Charles Ruggles provides some comic relief.

1730378932185.png

98. The Mad Doctor of Market Street (1942) ▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲ - A mad scientist is forced to leave San Francisco after his experiments become known. He lands on a tropical island, takes control and terrorizes the local populace. The survivor of a shipwreck washes ashore on the island, sees what is happening and determines to free the natives from his rule.

Kind of a rather average adventure horror story. Atwill is back and good as the "mad scientist" who convinces the natives he has power over life and death. Some lame attempts at comic relief from one of the female survivors and a budding love story contribute.

1730382030993.png

99. The Strange Case of Doctor Rx (1942) ▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲ - New York City is plagued by the so-called Doctor Rx killings in which five people so far have been strangled and a note, each successively numbered and signed ‘Rx,’ is found pinned to the body. Private detective Jerry Church takes the case but the crimes are baffling and involve strangulation and a possible attempt to implant a gorilla's brain into a human body.

Again featuring Lionel Atwill, this one's more of a murder mystery with enough SF/Horror attached to quality. Not bad, not great, and still watchable enough.

1730382301498.png

100. The Mad Ghoul (1943) ▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲ - A university chemistry professor experiments with an ancient Mayan gas on a medical student, turning the would-be surgeon into a murdering ghoul.

George Zucco is along for this somewhat contorted mad scientist/zombie film. Evelyn Ankers is a welcome sight in this, again, typical film of its type for the era. Still fun but nothing special.

1730382478957.png

101. Tower of London (1939) ▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲ -
In the 15th century Richard Duke of Gloucester, aided by his club-footed executioner Mord, eliminates those ahead of him in succession to the throne, then occupied by his brother King Edward IV of England. As each murder is accomplished he takes particular delight in removing small figurines, each resembling one of the successors, from a throne-room dollhouse, until he alone remains.

Let's be honest here... this is more historical drama with some horror undertones and horrific undertakings. It's good but not truly horror though is considered such by many people.

Medical professor needs bodies, and bodies he receives - from Boris Karloff, by any means necessary. The good doctor's apprentice figures out what's going on, and gets involved. The story is tight, the atmosphere is wonderful, and Bela has a small role, but it's the performance by Karloff that keeps me returning to this one time and again.

139) 10/30/2024 The Found Footage Phenomenon (2021) 1730392132286.png1730392132286.png1730392132286.png

Good documentary tracing the roots of the “found footage” film, going back to 1960s’ Peeping Tom and Mondo series and hitting all the influential films: Cannibal Holocaust, The Blair Witch Project, and Paranormal Activity. Makers of these films are interviewed, giving the viewer insights into methodology, approach, etc. Informative and entertaining.

140) 10/30/2024 The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007) 1730392132286.png1730392132286.png1730392132286.png

The police discover 2,400 videotapes documenting a serial killer’s reign of terror and the horrors he inflicted on his victims. Chilling and brutal mockumentary that implies more that it actually shows, as we watch several of the murders take place. Not everything works. But it’s engrossing from start to finish.

141) 10/30/2024 Southbound (2015) 1730392132286.png1730392132286.png1/2

Various characters find themselves on the highway to hell, coming to terms with their hellish destinies. A member of a rock bank must face the death of her fellow member; a man hits a woman with his car while on his cellphone but must do more to save her than he originally planned; a man tries to free his sister from the life she’s leading; and a family’s vacation takes a violent turn when three strangers attack. Succeeds to a degree as a mood piece, with second story the best. Decent cast and special effects.

142) 10/30/2024 Halloween Kills (2021) 1730392132286.png1730392132286.png1730392132286.png1/2

As Michael continues terrorizing Haddonfield, Illinois, its citizens band together to hunt him down, while Laurie Strode recovers from her injuries at the local hospital. Ambitious, underrated film takes on group trauma, mob mentality, guilt, and loss, and other things too, as it expands the Michael/Laurie story to include everyone and everything that Michael's original reign of terror impacted. Brilliantly juggles several different stories and characters, with great callbacks to the original film. And the ending is undeniably one of the most brutally emotional finales of the entire series. Too bad the third part of the trilogy didn’t expand the scope even further.

143) 10/30/2024 Tales of Halloween (2015) 1730392132286.png1730392132286.png1730392132286.png

Enjoyable collection of 10 Halloween-set shorts whose sum is greater than the total of the individual parts. Highlights include the ultimate lawn decoration battle between two neighbors; a pair of kidnappers who pick the wrong target; and a man-eating pumpkin that terrorizes a small town. Cameos by directors John Landis, Joe Dante, Stuart Gordon, and Mick Garris add to the fun. No classic but very entertaining, with no story wearing out its welcome.

144) 10/30/2024 Trick 'r Treat (2007) 1730392132286.png1730392132286.png1730392132286.png

Ingeniously structured anthology, sort of Tales from the Crypt meets Pulp Fiction. On Halloween night, several child and adult pranksters, murderers, etc. get their comeuppance in tales involving a villainous school principal, a grouchy old fart with a secret, vengeful spirits of murdered special needs kids, and a young woman looking to lose her innocence. I don't think the little Sam character really succeeds at becoming a new horror icon as the film hopes he will. But as an exercise in spooky storytelling this one hits the bullseye.

These are also two of my favorite Halloween anthology films.

I was wanting to watch Halloween Ends during this challenge, but I really didn't like Kills and I'm afraid I'm going to hate Ends and don't really want to end my challenge on a massive downer.

Watched the last half of Halloween (1978) at the gym yesterday. I do love the film but I always get so frustrated with Laurie at the end, unwilling to do what it takes to end Myers (though that would have ended the movie prematurely, I guess). One stab with a knitting needle, then she relaxes. He comes back. A couple stabs with a coat hanger and knife, then she relaxes. He comes back. This is always somewhat of a peeve of mine with slasher films, and really made me dislike the crowd scene near the end of Kills. Stab the killer a dozen times in the chest or cut off the head. If you have the upper hand, don't just stab/hit once and relax/run. End it.

Pummeled by critics upon its initial release and largely ignored by audiences binging on E.T., John Carpenter's film is now considered a masterpiece. My own opinion of it falls somewhere in between because I think there's been a bit of over-correction in the past few decades. I absolutely think it's a fantastic piece of sci-fi horror and a cool AF movie, but I also think many of the criticisms are valid, particularly when it comes to pacing during the back half of the movie, lapses in logic, and underdevelopment of the characters which I found lowered the stakes when it comes to caring about what happens to them. I did think the special effects were amazing and that Rob Bottin and his team were robbed of an Oscar nomination because they were certainly as good as, if not better than, the effects work in the other nominees (E.T., Blade Runner & Poltergeist).

I also find it interesting that while people generally like to shit on remakes, in the period from 1978 to 1988 there was a run of some fantastic remakes of classic horror films that were, in many cases, better than the originals (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Thing, The Fly, The Blob, et. al.)

October 30: The Beast with Five Fingers (1946; Robert Florey): 4 out of 5 (TCM broadcast)

Rare - and lone - venture into the horror genre in the 1940's for Warner Bros. concerns strange events at a Northern Italian villa at the turn of the 20th Century following the death of a nearly paralyzed pianist. The pianist's longtime secretary (Peter Lorre) is convinced that he is the target of vengeance from beyond the grave...

I was hoping to have the Warner Archive Blu-ray in my possession to review it before Halloween, but this little blurb will have to do until then. Atmospheric horror tale boasts some solid performances, decent effects work and a terrific Max Steiner score utilizing Bach's Chaconne from the Partita for Violin in D Minor as a recurring motif.

I was absolutely blown away by this film. I need more time to process it, but I can say that the social commentary, the acting, the writing, the directing, the cinematography, the special effects - every detail was marvelous. Basically, this movie is Cronenberg directing Sunset Boulevard. My favorite new film of the year.

116. Orgy of the Dead (NEW), 2 out of 5
Not sure why this wasn't called Mostly Naked Women Dancing For Extensive Periods of Time in a Graveyard. The writing style you'd expect from Ed Wood with acting just a smidge under the level of Plan 9 From Outer Space.

I watched all on disc. My comments:

In Thesis (Spain, 1996), Angela, a university student working on a thesis on audiovisual violence, ends up with a videocassette of another university student, who went missing two years earlier, being tortured and murdered. Angela heads down a dark rabbit hole where no one can be trusted. The climax isn’t as amped up and I would have expected, and the solution is a movie ending but will do.

Edith is an aspiring author in a turn-of-the-century wealthy New England family. Thomas is an Englishman with a title, a possessive sister, and little else, save, back in England, a huge but ramshackle mansion, full of mysteries, that Edith soon inhabits. Crimson Peak (2015), confidently directed by Guillermo del Toro, is a gothic romance perfect for Halloween. The presence of ghosts seems a bizarre coincidence in an already ghastly family, and although the violent scenes are few, the extreme gore seems out of place in what once might have been called a “woman’s picture,” like Rebecca but with a scene in which you see a knife plunged into someone’s face. Still, the movie, with beautiful visuals, creates a world that envelopes you for two hours for a most welcome stay.

I watched the 170-minute director’s cut of Midsommar (2019) on A24’s UHD. After enduring a terrible family tragedy, a young American woman travels with her boyfriend and his student friends to a Swedish commune to participate in the pagan Midsommar celebration. In time, things grow dark. At first, the movie feels like a slice-of-life drama. As far as I recall, it’s the only movie I’ve seen in which two characters argue over the choice of topic for an academic thesis. The Americans are pigeon-holed early as personality types and behave accordingly thereafter, remarkably unable to consider how they might be received, and the pagan practices grow so ridiculous that it eventually becomes clear that no, this isn’t meant to be taken seriously. The movie’s a dark comedy that won’t tickle every funny bone, but it does offer a singular viewing experience.

I never thought I’d be bored by a movie with wall-to-wall female nudity until I saw Orgy of the Dead… and to cap it off, the one woman I really wanted to see nekkid (Fawn Silver as the Black Ghoul) keeps her kit on the whole time.

Not much that I can say about this one that hasn't already been said. However, I never get tired of watching Boris Karloff's performance.

I was actually begging for more terrible dialogue! That's the good stuff in these b-clunkers. But nope, it was just a whole lotta shakin' going on.
