So my final tally wrap up!
131 Films - 131 Points
1 TV series, 9 x1 hour episodes for 4.5 Points
135.5 total points.

Out of 132 total watches, 119 were first time watches. 1 was in the theater and a repeat viewing.

Best of the challenge: Pearl (2022) and The Sadness (2021) where both the jaw droppers for me. I had quite a few films that I gave 4 out of 5 stars to that could be considered honorable mentions.

Worst of the challenge: SEED (2007). When you go all in watching movies in banana-level numbers you're pretty much guaranteed to hit a bunch of mediocre films if you go in blind. That said, SEED commits the sin of being reprehensible in its shameful use of animal cruelty footage on top of being dull, boring and frustratingly presented.

I'd have to double check, but the stars aligned for me with time off work that allowed me to hit the largest number I think I've his with my total views. 132 titles, with one being a 9 hour TV limited series, I'm super pleased. Now I'm back to work tomorrow and wondering when I'm going to get the time to watch all the special features I want to go through that I skipped for time. I wont be in Noirvember, November for me is physical disc special feature/wrestling catch-up month haha. My main lesson learned this challenge is maybe I don't need to collect so many boutique label films. Maybe films slip through the cracks and become obscure for legitimate reasons of not being all that good?

It's been a pleasure, as always, seeing all of your posts, reading all your reviews and taking notes on films to try to watch during next years challenge. Below is my final list in spoiler form:

My entry for worst movie watched is Hocus Pocus II (2022) - I hope to never have to watch it again...

Welp, my wrap-up is a bit less than I thought it would be due to the points value on TV series shows. Ash vs Evil Dead are 30-minute episodes, so the 12 I watched only add up to 4 points. The Rings of Power are 1-1.5 hour-long episodes, and the 8 I watched add up to 4 points as well, according to the rules. That gives me only 8 points for the combined 20 episodes of these two shows that I viewed, which is fine.

So, my final tally is 47 feature films, 16 being new to me. The Rings of Power at 4 points was also new to me.

TOTAL POINTS: 55
TOTAL NEW: 20

My favorite new discovery was The Rings of Power. I thought the show did a great job with Middle Earth. The worst new watch? Blue Monkey. That film had been on my radar for YEARS, and I was really disappointed in it. What a stinker! Anyway, this year's Challenge was a blast, and I'm already looking forward to next year!

Bold denotes first every viewing

089) 10/29/2022 The Mask of Fu Manchu (1932)
1667410584044.png
1667410584044.png 1/2

Boris Karloff is delightfully sinister as Dr. Fu Manchu, evil genius, who wants several artifacts that once belonged to Genghis Khan. With them he can create a new world empire. Campy, racist, and a real product of its time. But mostly enjoyable for Karloff's performance.

090) 10/29/2022 The Beast with Five Fingers (1946) 1667410584044.png 1667410584044.png 1667410584044.png

When a wealthy pianist dies and leaves everything to his nurse, his brother-in-law and nephew plan to contest the will. But then a series of strangulation murders begins, allegedly committed by the deceased's severed hand! Peter Lorre is one of the potential victims. Wonderfully atmospheric direction by Robert Florey and a good cast make this one of the best of its type.

091) 10/29/2022 The Brides of Dracula (1960) 1667410584044.png 1667410584044.png 1667410584044.png 1/2

A cheat title for one of Hammer Film's best efforts, a follow-up to Horror of Dracula. Peter Cushing returns as Professor Van Helsing, discovering vampire hovering about prestigious private school for young ladies. Great bloodwork here, with memorable windmill finale.

092) 10/29/2022 The Ghost (1963) 1667410584044.png 1667410584044.png 1667410584044.png

Barbara Steele plots with her husband's doctor to murder him. They succeed, but then strange events suggest maybe they didn't. Colorful, atmospheric ghost story/mystery with the First Lady of fright slowing going mad. Features a bloody attack with a razor, rather graphic for its day.

093) 10/29/2022 The Old Dark House (1932) 1667410584044.png 1667410584044.png 1667410584044.png 1667410584044.png

Another James Whale-directed classic. A violent thunderstorm forces several travelers to seek shelter at home of, shall we say, dysfunctional family. One of the members may be a killer. Witty script and dialogue, with genuine moments of terror and comedy.

094) 10/29/2022 Hack-O-Lantern (1988) 1667410584044.png 1/2

As he comes of age, young man looks forward to joining his grandfather's (Hy Pyke) satanic cult. Meanwhile a devilishly dressed figure starts slaying people connected to the family. Pyke's scenery chewing gives this some modest entertainment value. But most of the performances are weak as is the mystery. I barely remember it almost 4 days later.

095) 10/29/2022 3 Dead Trick or Treaters (2016) 1667410584044.png 1667410584044.png

Unsuccessful if ambitious attempt at horror anthology features no dialogue by the main cast, rendering their characters enigmas with fuzzy motivations and no connection to the viewers. Stories concern a house that serves cannibals; a witchy ritual gone wrong; a street youth who double crosses his friends; police who run an unorthodox delivery service; and the wrap around story concerning a paperboy who discovers a writer gone mad. Some interesting visuals and ideas get swallowed up by indifference. Hard to care about anything here.

096) 10/29/2022 Trick 'r Treat (2007) 1667410584044.png 1667410584044.png 1667410584044.png

Ingeniously structured anthology, sort of Tales From the Crypt meets Pulp Fiction. On Halloween night, several child and adult pranksters, murderers, etc. get their comeuppance in tales involving a villainous school principal, a grouchy old fart with a secret, vengeful spirits of murdered special needs kids, and a young woman looking to lose her innocence. I don't think the little Sam character really succeeds at becoming a new horror icon as the film hopes he will. But as an exercise in spooky storytelling this one hits the bullseye.

097) 10/30/2022 Muppets' Haunted Mansion (2021) 1667410584044.png 1667410584044.png 1667410584044.png

Gonzo eschews attending the Muppet's Halloween party so he can attend a special party hosted by his all-time favorite magician. There Gonzo must face his fears, even though he claims not to have any. If you like the Muppets, puns, sight gags, bad jokes, and one-liners, this is for you. If not, stay away.

098) 10/30/2022 Halloween (1978) 1667412575252.png 1667412575252.png 1667412575252.png 1667412575252.png

Still the finest mad slasher (if you want to label it as such) there is, with a focus on style, suspense, and mood instead of graphic violence as substitute for all of the above. Michael Myers' motivations can only be guessed at, as no definitive reason or reasons is/are given. That makes him unpredictable and scary.

099) 10/30/2022 Halloween II (1981) 1667412575252.png 1667412575252.png 1/2

Imitating most of the technical strengths of its predecessor is what gives the sequel its modest success, Story wise though the script is weak: a hospital where no other patients except babies seem to be present; a focus on graphic violence that betrays the first film; and an utterly ridiculous plot twist which doomed the series from this point on. On its own, though, it works mostly well. And Michael Myers is still creepy, the Pepe Le Pew of all slashers.

100) 10/30/2022 Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988) 1667412575252.png 1667412575252.png 1667412575252.png

During his transport to yet another facility, Michael Myers learns he has a niece. So he escapes and goes looking for his young relative. A return to suspense and character versus gory set pieces distinguishes this good sequel.

101) 10/30/2022 Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1988) 1667412575252.png 1/2

WTF? Who thought Tina was a good idea? Who thought getting rid of Rachael was the way to go? Who thought adding comedy music cues for a couple of lunkhead cops was the best decision? The plot? Michael's niece is now housed at hospital for creepy kids, or something like that. She has a supernatural connection to her uncle, who returns Halloween night to kill more people. Lame.

102) 10/31/2022 Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers (Producer's Cut) (1995) 1667412575252.png 1667412575252.png

Better than the theatrical cut, this entry in the Michael Myers saga at least is more coherent and has a nasty twist at the end. But the script is still clunky and hodgepodge, written by a fan who tried to tie everything together from the previous entries into a pretty package. Instead he helped hang the franchise out to dry, as this was the last in the Druid-themed Myers story. Good riddance.

103) 10/31/2022 Halloween H2O: 20 Years Later (1998) 1667412575252.png 1667412575252.png 1/2

Ignoring Michael's Return and Revenge, this effort re-purposes the Myers saga to begin again after the events in Halloween II. Laurie Strode is now Keri Tate, administrator of posh, private California high school, but struggling as a single mother with her past. That past is about to catch up with her and hunt her, as brother Michael has tracked her down and shows up to say Happy Halloween! While better than the previous 2 entries, this still feels a bit tired. Jamie Lee Curtis is strong, but it feels like she's playing Jamie Lee Curtis, not Laurie Strode.

104) 10/31/2022 Halloween: Resurrection (2002) 1667412575252.png 1667412575252.png

Internet conman plans spooky night at the Myers home for several young wannabes. He hooks them up with cameras so an audience can follow them through the birthplace of evil. What no one realizes is that Michael has actually returned, and he doesn't like trespassers. Technically interesting, with some good ideas and clever editing. But we've seen all of this before and there really was no reason to see it again. Goodnight, Michael.

105) 10/31/2022 It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! (1966) 1667414241681.png 1667414241681.png 1667414241681.png 1667414241681.png

All time greatest Halloween special. beautifully animated and cleverly constructed. Snoopy is a hoot and a half. Still love it after what must amount to over 50 viewings through the years.

106) 10/31/2022 Hair-Raising Hare (1946) 1667414241681.png 1667414241681.png 1667414241681.png 1667414241681.png

Bugs Bunny is lured to evil scientist's (drawn and voiced as Peter Lorre) castle where hairy, sneakered monster wants a rabbit dinner. More laughs packed in this than found in most 90 minute comedies. ("Don't think it hasn't been a little slice of heaven. 'Cause it hasn't.")

107) 10/31/2022 Bugs Bunny's Howl-oween Special (1977) 1667414241681.png 1667414241681.png 1667414241681.png

While the best way to see the classic Warner Bros.' shorts will always be the full length originals, this is actually a solid sample of spooky Looney Tunes shorts. Witch Hazel is as much the star of this as Bugs Bunny. Daffy Duck and Sylvester the Cat get some good laughs too.

108) 10/31/2022 Garfield's Halloween Adventure (1985) 1667414241681.png 1667414241681.png 1667414241681.png

The obese, lasagna-loving cat goes trick-or-treating with "brother" Odie the dog; discovers isolated home where pirates hid their ill-gotten gains a 100 years ago and are planning to return Halloween night. Good laughs, cute songs, with sufficiently creepy animation of the pirate ghosts.

109) 10/31/2022 Sinister (2012) 1667414241681.png 1667414241681.png 1667414241681.png 1/2

Wrapped up this year with a favorite of recent vintage. True-crime novelist, trying to write another best seller, moves his family into the home where a family was murdered and the youngest child kidnapped. She is still missing, and he hopes his research might help find her. What he discovers instead is a series of murders and disappearances linked to ancient demon. Great blending of mystery and horror, with inevitable but still powerful denouement. And that lawnmower scene! Yikes!

Love these, and wish I'd had more time to include them in the challenge. May still watch them this week.

Love the "slice of heaven" line, and Witch Hazel has always tickled me with her laugh and always sprinting away amidst a cloud of spinning hair pins. The animation of that character is priceless.
