I didn't think Conan O'Brien was relevant to anything anymore? Shows how far down in the barrel they had to reach to scrape up a host. Apparently no one of note wants the job.

Why would anyone want the job in this day and age?

Television viewership declines year after year and the Oscars aren’t immune to that, but the morning after the telecast, the host gets the blame for that anyway.

The show runs long each year and is padded with segments that have little to do with the ceremony despite the complaints of length, and even though the host doesn’t write those parts or have a say in whether they’re included, they get blamed for it.

The show is written by committee but when someone is offended by the content, the host gets the blame for it.

If I was a Hollywood agent I certainly wouldn’t be putting a big effort into getting my clients booked on it. There’s very little upside to taking the gig but plenty of blame for when it doesn’t achieve unrealistic benchmarks.

I don't know the average age of people on Reddit, but on a rather lengthy series of posts about this subject about 4 months ago, Conan O'Brien was repeatedly mentioned; so were "The Muppets."

According to BuzzMeter in the L.A. Times, these are the titles that the critics are touting for Best Picture:

All We Imagine As Light
Anora
Blitz
Brutalist, The
Challengers
Complete Unknown, A
Conclave
Dune: Part Two
Emilia Perez
Gladiator II
Here
Juror #2
Nickel Boys
Piano Lesson, The
Real Pain, A
Room Next Door, The
September 5
SingSing
Wicked

I liked a Kate Winslet movie titled "Lee" that I saw recently. It's a biopic, so there's the usual complaint from critics that it's a "standard" or "conventional" biopic. I'm not a fan of movie reviewers writing "standard" or "conventional" reviews of biopics.

At least Conan will get some publicity out of this. I don’t think his “career” can be hurt at this time.

I'm a bit surprised that ABC would sign off on a host associated with late night who isn't on their network. But I think O'Brien will do a good job. He's not somebody I would have thought of for this, but he seems like a good idea.

I think some pundits had their eye on Here early on because it is a Forrest Gump reunion movie. If it had been received like that movie was, it would probably have been a serious contender. On paper, you would think a new movie with the writer, director and stars of a beloved previous Best Picture winners should garner a lot of attention. However, it crashed and burned both with critics and at the box office, so I don't see that happening now.

Well, he hasn't been on a major network since 2010, which is why I wondered if he was still relevant to the culture at-large. His show, Conan, was on TBS cable and that ended in 2021.

Well, they don't have much of a choice on that score. Kimmel turned it down, and I can't see them offering the spot to Guillermo.
Conan has a much bigger social footprint now than he did as the host of his own talk show post 2010 when he joined TBS. A pretty popular podcast and a YouTube channel with 8.7 million subscribers. In some ways more relevant now than when he was last on television. The initial ratings bump on TBS was very good but it soon started dwindling - it is difficult to compete w relevant and exclusive guests when you're competing with the reach that the major networks have. The late night talk show is not a growth industry. That's why he started doing the guest free travel destination shows. Personally, he will be funny, self deprecating and will do a decent job roasting almost everyone in his monologue and in any filmed bits. They could do worse.

I don't disagree. My point to Jake was that once Kimmel decided he didn't want to host the Oscars again, there wasn't any other "host associated with late night who [is] on their network". So they had to go elsewhere for someone who'd be interested in the gig. Talent contracts with their respective networks would probably get in the way of ABC being able to ask Colbert, Fallon, or Meyers. If they insist on using a late-night show comedian, they've got a choice among Conan, John Oliver, or the gang at The Daily Show. All in all, of those, Conan is probably their best option.

"Back in the day" Johnny Carson (NBC) hosted the Oscars and it was on ABC. I think it would be different today. More brand sensitivity and exclusivity clauses in contracts. A mandate by the parent network to use "in house" talent to promote their shows etc. on the Oscars.

At around 25 mins in they start chatting about the choice of Conan to host the Oscars.
