As has been documented in its thread, I didn't like Deadpool and Wolverine. But Hugh Jackman is a proven host of the Oscars, and pairing him with Reynolds would cause lots of interest in the ceremony. That would be a good thing as far as the Academy is concerned.

Well, if they actually get the call, it certainly won't be quite so gratuitously irreverent and violent (and full of F-bombs, etc)... at least on the main TV broadcast/stream I suppose -- maybe they'll try to sneak some not-for-TV stuff into it somewhere away from the regular ABC broadcast, heh...

But would the folks overseeing the Oscars really wanna go there and somehow have any (toned down) variation of Reynolds/Wade/Deadpool (NVM Jackman/Logan/Wolverine) running loose for the show? :P I suppose they could try contractually forcing him/them to behave enough, LOL... but it's not like Reynolds will be terribly concerned about potentially getting banned from the Oscars given the kinda roles/movies he generally takes (even besides Deadpool), right? ;)

I don't think they would have to be concerned with that. I wasn't suggesting that Jackman or Reynolds should host the show as Wolverine or Deadpool respectively.

Jackman has successfully hosted both the Oscars and the Tonys before, and he is having a moment right now with the success of the movie. So it would make sense to ask him. A hypothetical pairing with Reynolds would take advantage of the rapport that they had in the movie. But they would be hosting as themselves, not as the characters. They both know how to behave at awards shows. Most people do, other than Will Smith.

Well, they've never had Reynolds do it before -- and he's actually the wildcard in any of such, heh, not Jackman (at least on his own)... especially if there's remotely any connection to the success of this Deadpool movie, heh... ;):D Reynolds would surely inject some humor related to Deadpool and/or this specific movie, if they're hosting together, but just not sure how much so, heh... Even besides Deadpool, he's always been far more a over-the-top nutty, wisecracking type than Jackman ever was AFAIK. Deadpool just lets him completely out and loose on screen is all, heh...

As much as I really like John Mullaney, I was surprised in that Hollywood Reporter article to see quotes from people saying they really liked his hosting of the Academy's Governor's Ball. I watched it on youtube and did not think he was very good doing that.

The hosts people like from the past are the ones we all got used to doing it.

Coincidentally, YouTue's algorithm just suggested this video for me. It is a reminder of how good Hugh Jackman was the last time he hosted in 2009.

They really should offer it to him again.

The problem is people need to accept these offers. For most, it seems like a job they don't want.

Lots of time commitment, work, and scrutiny with very little upside for major stars.

Agreed. Recent Oscars hosts tend to have received more criticism. Only Billy Crystal seems to have been more universally acclaimed.

Academy rules new Matt Damon and Ben Affleck documentary ineligible for Oscars because, while the film played in over 100 theaters including in the mandatory cities, It didn't play 3 times a day in those cities. The Academy provided them with the rule book for last year which didn't have the 3 times a day requirement and are the rules that come up when you search for the Oscar rules.

"The award-winning film — exploring the 1990s siege of Sarajevo and how the city’s residents took inspiration from U2’s music amid a campaign of extermination — played in more than 130 AMC cinemas nationwide, far surpassing the theatrical distribution of most documentaries (in fact, it had one of the widest releases of any documentary since the pandemic). But, in what filmmakers see as a technicality, the Academy judged the film screened two times a day in a qualifying market, and not the prescribed three times as stipulated by Oscar rules."

Is that the only reason they made the film, as Oscar bait? Seems like there are more important issues surrounding the subject than self-congratulatory awards. They should be wary of protesting too much.

^^^ I doubt that's why the film was made, but award nominations give any film more attention and hence more people are apt to see it. That's what film makers want. In fact, if you read the whole article the filmmakers actually delayed a short run of the film in ONE theatre that would've qualified the film for last year, but AMC came to them with a deal they accepted that showed the film hundreds of times this year.

Then the producers told AMPAS that AMC would be willing to do another qualifying run this past September, but the documentary branch executive committee dismissed that offer because it had premiered on Paramount+ in May, meaning under Academy guidelines it then would be considered to have debuted on streaming before its qualifying theatrical release.

If you search this topic, including wikipedia, you'll find a lot of articles from the past about the rules for documentaries changing constantly to a remarkable and problematic extent. In 2012 someone proposed this, which makes total sense to me: "Instead of going back to the drawing board and making up new rules, let's just put an end to that right now. No more special documentary rules. How about we play by the same rules as every other branch? This approach would mean that documentaries would qualify for the Oscars under the same standards that other films are subject to – standards that are less restrictive than the doc-branch regulations. We should abide by the rules that every other branch has to abide by and we should leave it up to the Academy staff to decide if films qualify, the same way they decide for every fiction film."

AMPAS didn't even establish a Documentary Branch until 2001.

Great. Affleck won an Oscar for Best PIcture because he cried he was "snubbed" for Best Director. Now, he's trying to whine his way to a Documentary Oscar win.

What a garbage decision from the music branch. There have been plenty of sequels nominated for this category before, including Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny last year. The Return of the King even won after The Fellowship of the Ring won in the same category. They used themes from the previous films. Dune Part Two is my favorite score of the year so far and I think it should be eligible.

This is just another reason not to respect the opinion of the Academy.
