They could double the number of nominations in a combined category in order to compensate for the number of nominees problem.

My understanding is that eliminating the gendered acting categories would be in an effort to be more inclusive to performers who do not identify with one of those genders. For them, it might not be working just fine. I don't have that perspective myself so I can't speak to it directly.

Generally speaking, I think more inclusion is a good thing.

However, I am not sure if collapsing the categories would actually result in more inclusion. As you noted, there would be fewer awards given out.

Maybe they could split the genres like the Golden Globes, then could still give out two awards:

Best Acting Lead in a Comedy/Musical
Best Acting Lead in a Drama

Though that would most likely prevent multiple noms from a single film (e.g. Best Actor and Best Actress nominated from the same film). Only one acting performance could be recognized with a win.

I can see why some people think un-gendering the acting categories would be a good idea. I can also see why some people think it would be a bad idea. I'd probably find myself somewhere in the middle, with a tropism towards the "bad idea" end of the spectrum. The road to hell is, after all, paved with good intentions.

I’m certainly not opposed to CASTING as a category. But STUNTS should have been added decades ago.

And if you think they are shrinking the acting categories, you are nuts. The Oscars are about as acting-centric as the SAGs.

SAG gives out a STUNT ENSEMBLE award for TV and FILM.

They never show the award being given on their telecast and they never even announce on air who won. From what I've seen over the years, the film that wins is usually the film with the most "visual effects," whether or not there is any actual stunt work. Visual Effects doesn't automatically mean there are stunts involved. I'd wager some of the best stunt work in movies is under the radar, not the flashy or showy kind.

The only Honorary Oscar I know of that was given in this vein was when AMPAS gave one to stuntman Yakima Canutt.

I haven't overdosed on those, but I have to admit that their Heineken commercial got old pretty quick.
