I don't know if I've seen any movie this year that's as memorable and gut wrenching as Honeyland. It's now my film of the year. What starts out as upsetting and uncomfortable to watch turns into something magnetic and irresistible. Not only a riveting documentary, but also spectacularly shot. Will be talking about this for weeks.

It took all of two mintues before I realized that Zellweger going to win, and she totally deserves it. I enjoyed the movie much more than anticipated. I always prefer this slice of time biopic to the book report style.

HONEYLAND is brilliant. As noted above, it's my #3 film of any kind last year among the nominees. So good, it's the very first movie to ever be nominated for both Best Documentary and Best International/Foreign Language film.

Honeyland is magnificent! Almost every shot is a masterpiece of lighting. However, I still don't understand how this slice-of-life documentary is nominated in a category that should be reserved for "fictional" stories in the "international" category.
Nonetheless, it's a must watch. It's that good!

The rules allow for any primarily non-English language film to be nominated by a country other than the US, including documentary and animated. So I supposed you could thread the needle and make an animated documentary in a non-English language produced outside of the US and receive a nomination for all three categories. And if it's that celebrated, it could also nab Best Picture.

I noticed that series existed. I did not know that it was only $5 a ticket. Unlike AMC or Regal this series has all Best Picture nominees playing.

Yes, Landmark is the only chain that will work with Netflix.

HONEYLAND was eligible for Best Picture as well (it played the requisite one week in theaters in L.A.). And, in a just cinema world it would have received that triple distinction.

To note: ALL Documentaries that play the qualifying week are eligible for Best Picture. In fact, Michael Moore took FAHRENHEIT 911 out of the Documentary race and competed for Best Picture instead (he had already won a Doc Oscar for BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE) and wanted to give other filmmakers a chance.

You guys piqued my interest in Honeyland which is available to rent on iTunes.

I’ll be honest in that the trailer doesn’t make the film look that interesting. But I’m going to rent and watch it based on the raves above. Hope I like it.

I have a feeling that AMERICAN FACTORY is going to win. More audience friendly. Oh, and a certain popular ex-President is exective Producer. One Barack Obama.

Saw "Little Women" yesterday, the final of the BP noms I'll see pre-Oscars next week. ("Irishman" and "Marriage" will have to wait for Blu-rays.)

    My ranking:

    1) Joker
    2) Jojo
    3) Ford
    4) Parasite
    5) 1917
    6) Hollywood
    7) Little Women

I saw all the animated shorts today, my favorite is "Hair Love". The rest are all good but "Daughter" just didn't do much for me. A few extra highly commendable shorts were thrown in to bring the presentation to feature length. I will see the live action shorts later this week.
