Don't rent it. Parasite is worth a trip to the theater. You'll thank me later.

A-List wouldn't have helped you with Marriage Story anyway because AMC never screened it. The big chains will all ignore both The Irishman and Marriage Story in their Oscar weeks/marathons because they are both Netflix films.

Worst snub of all time: DaFoe got hosed. This was the most brilliant acting I have ever seen.

Original Screenplay is one hell of a close race. Not a clunker in the bunch.

Only best picture nom I haven't seen yet in 1917 which I was already planning to see today.

I'm hoping for a five-way tie. :) Seriously though, that's one category where all the nominees are so good that even if my favorite doesn't win, I can't be too bothered because whatever wins is really good.

Biggest surprise to me is the Best Actor category: Banderas in; DeNiro and Sandler out.

Has there ever been four films with double-digit nominations in the same year before?

I respect Joker, and I think it's nominations are mostly deserved, but I never want to see it again. I'm going to predict zero wins.

I think we have a real horse race for a change between Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Irishman, and 1917 for Picture and Director. All three are terrific films. Personally rooting for 1917 right now, but would also love to see QT pick up Best Director.

My cousin really liked Willem’s performance too.
I predict Phoenix will get his trophy- I don’t think he’s won an Oscar yet, has he?

Just checked on IMDb.com- this is his 4th nomination,
    no wins.

Really? I thought that movie was terrific - a really good coming of age story.

    Haven't seen "Little Women" yet!

    I've not seen:

    Parasite
    Little Women
    1917
    Irishman
    Marriage Story

Will see "Parasite" on BD. Will probably get to "LW" and "1917" theatrically in the next couple of weeks.

Will see "MS" and "Irishman"... never? I guess they're on Netflix!

There’s a list of snubs at another site that mentions Jennifer Lopez- some think she got overlooked for an Oscar nomination for her performance in Hustlers.
    Others mentioned-
DeNiro for his role in The Irishman (he is nominated as a producer)
    Sandler
    Bale (Ford V Ferrari)
Beyonce (best song in The Lion King)

Disagree - I think Phoenix is a lock.

Of my early thoughts about the noms, Phoenix is pretty much the only one I've seen where I think the outcome isn't in doubt!

That seems to be the running attitude, but I admit I don't get it.

Lopez did fine in "Hustlers", but it wasn't much of a movie, and I didn't think she did anything remarkable in the role - other than look that good almost naked at 50!

It's a more than adequate performance but not some amazing turn that demanded recognition...

Zero chance of that happening. ;)

D'oh! You & Colin are right. Had a brain fart when writing that, for some reason Phoenix didn't come to mind when thinking through the noms - going to blame it on getting old  . He is pretty much a lock.

It can't have helped Lopez's chances that Hustlers wasn't a studio picture either.

The only Best Picture nominee I haven't seen is Parasite, but that will be corrected shortly. But I'm generally happy with the nominations. It probably doesn't have the pedigree to win, but my emotional favorite of the list is now JoJo Rabbit, which is about as original a film as I've seen in ages, and never would have been made if the director hadn't made the studio some big bucks doing the Thor picture first to get support for doing his pet project.

J Lo is a decent actress (Out of Sight), but I'm glad to see her left off the list for Hustlers, which is just a terrible, shallow, flashy shopping-fashion-porn flick (not to be confused with actual porn). It should have just been a music video.

Ironically 1917 required masterful editing to make it appear seamless, but will lose in that category for the very reason of people thinking it didn't require editing.

And Greta Gerwig should definitely have been nominated for Best Director, because an actor ensemble piece such as Little Women requires great directing more than any other type of picture, imo. Bump Phillips.

I'm also onboard with believing Joker is getting way more accolades than it deserves (and $$$), but agree Joaquin is definitely a shoo-in for Best Actor because, remember, it's the ROLE, not the actor, that determines who wins. And playing someone going mental (with the help of society) is about as flashy a role as there is.

As I’ve said before, nominations are earned not deserved. I am sometimes sad that one of my favorites is not nominated, but never feel as though a conscious decision was made to not nominate.

Joker was the worst movie I saw all year. I absolutely hated it. Pretentious Scorcese pastiche masquerading as art with a tangential and nonsensical relationship to the comic material done in order to market it as commerce. Cynical, soulless, and total bullshit on multiple levels. I can sort of understand why it made a billion dollars -- there's an audience out there to identify with a disaffected and socially inept protagonist (although they should just watch Taxi Driver instead of wasting their money on this dreck). But 11 nominations including screenplay, and director? It feels like a rating ploy. Either that or there are a lot more incels in the Academy than I thought.

It had been predicted that The Farewell blew up too early to be on anyone's radar come nomination time, and I guess that's the case. Completely shut out.
