SOUND EDITING

Ford v Ferrari (Not seen or heard it but it seems likely to be awarded)
Joker (I seen the ending for free on youtube, not my cup of tea)
1917 (Not seen it, possible awarded for true story of trenches)
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (fictitious story unlikely to be awarded)
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (gets a nod by disney killed it, thank goodness this trash is over now we can all go back to watching how great the unaltered originals are)

SOUND MIXING

Ad Astra (awkward movie to watch and listen too and had it on 4k now for weeks and not even watched/listened to it all the way though as it seems like, Apocalypse Now in outer space.)

I think Ford vs Ferrari will be awarded for sound editing and sound mixing, of early morning hours tomorrow, well can go to the site and look for updates tomorrow.

Here are my Oscar predictions. Before that, however, let me say that my favorite film of 2019 was 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'. I will be thrilled if it wins Best Picture, DiCaprio wins Best Actor and Tarantino wins Best Director. Heck, I'll be happy if Once... Hollywood wins every category for which it is nominated.

That said, realistically, here's how I predict the evening will go:

Best Picture: 1917
Best Director: Sam Mendes (1917)
Best Actress: Renée Zellweger (Judy)
Best Actor: Joaquin Phoenix (Joker)
Best Supporting Actor: Brad Pitt (Once... Hollywood)
Best Supporting Actress: Laura Dern (Marriage Story)
Best Original Screenplay: Quentin Tarantino (Once... Hollywood)
Best Adapted Screenplay: Taika Waititi (Jo Jo Rabbit)
Best Animated Feature: Toy Story 4
Best Documentary Feature: Honeyland
Best International Feature: Parasite
Best Original Score: Thomas Newman (1917)
Best Original Song: I'm Gonna Love Me Again (Rocketman)
Best Sound Editing: Rachael Tate (1917)
Best Sound Mixing: Steve Morrow (Ford v Ferrari)
Best Makeup: Anne Morgan (Bombshell)
Best Costume Design: Jacqueline Durran (Little Women)
Best Cinematography: Roger Deakins (1917)
Best Production Design: Dennis Gassner (1917)
Best Film Editing: Michael McCusker (Ford v Ferrari)
Best Visual Effects: Dan Deleeuw, etc. (Avengers: Endgame)
Best Documentary Short: Learning To Skateboard In A Warzone
Best Live Action Short Film: Brotherhood
Best Animated Short Film: Kitbull

As I've said before in this thread, the Oscar voters are entitled to their opinions and if they only want to nominate white men, there's nothing that people outside the membership can do about that really.

But the reason it bothers me is because Hollywood runs on a system where awards recognition helps you get attention, and funding, for whatever the next thing you want to do is.

Greta Gerwig was originally hired to write Little Women. Even though she wanted to direct it, Sony was unwilling to consider her for directing her own script until after she had awards attention for Lady Bird. Then they came back to her with the directing offer she wanted in the first place.

So if diverse voices are not nominated, that makes it harder for them to get their foot in the door for the next project. And then we have a situation where it's a self-fulfilling prophecy that only men win, because the women/people of color/other diversity group aren't getting the kind of attention that brings them nominations and more chances to make movies.

Is it really going to matter in ten years if Sam Mendes wins Best Director and Greta Gerwig wasn't nominated? Probably not. Her film of Little Women will endure regardless of her being overlooked for it. But what does matter is making sure we have a system where people with different perspectives get to make movies, and Hollywood has decided that awards recognition is a part of the fuel that runs their system.

I want to see all different kinds of movies from different kinds of people with unique ideas and distinctive stories including those that would not occur to white men. So that's why the issue of diversity is important, because it ends up being reflected in the movies that come down the pike just as much as the ones that are already here.

I understand where you're coming from and agree the awards of course have the reach you describe, but the challenge for me is in mixing what (IMO) must remain a secondary concern with the primary concern, which is nominating films based on merit. To suggest mixing social justice-based advancement with what should be impartial judgment of art as common practice, as it seems you are, is to open the door to any metric we decide should be elevated above that primary concern in the future.

I share your opinion on advancement for women and people of color (as well as your Gerwig disappointment, who I agree should have been nominated). But my view is we should assume the voters have the best intention/judgment in mind - not to suggest you think the opposite - and if movies originating from women and people of color aren't making the grade in a given year, the healthiest conclusion should be they needed to make better films during those twelve months.

Here are my predictions, with my personal choices also indicated for most categories (there will several categories where I hadn't seen enough of the nominees or just felt "meh" about all of them - song, for example). Not sure if this is the Oscar viewing thread or not, but I’ll say this, while the Martin/Rock monologue has some funny lines. It had the undercurrent or not enough women and not enough blacks. And I wonder why this still seems to be a problem with one of the most apparent progressive institutions in the world.
