If 12 YEARS A SLAVE wins I will be so happy when a few years from now it starts to get some of the hate it deserves for beating out much better movies not because of quality but because of the subject.

MANDINGO never won any awards despite being about a similar subject.

Well, MANDINGO and its sequel were pretty bad movies IMO.

I think DJANGO UNCHAINED said a lot more and was much more powerful in regards to its images and views on slavery.

I recall an interview where someone said Django Unchained paved the way for 12 Years a Slave. I don't know how much that holds up though.

You see, I just don't really know what the big deal was about the picture. The original story of the man was incredibly fascinating but I thought it got lost due to the director. I didn't really find the material shocking and as I said, I already knew slavery was evil so I didn't need this movie preaching at me. Perhaps many people just aren't as well rounded on the subject so perhaps some people found it fresh, new and eye-opening. It just never struck me as that. The violence was certainly painful to look at but it should be and I don't see these graphic scenes as a reason to love the picture.

Again, I understand I'm in the minority on this one (and HER) but if it weren't for some of the performances I'd say both were drive-in material.

I won't even see most of the actual ceremony because I'll be watching True Detective. That show is better than almost every movie I saw last year. And if McConaughey wins the Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club then he should win the Noble Prize for True Detective.

I'm a little worried because it seems the producers have been pushing the music more than the actual movies. The opening sketch with Kimmel was...rather...dumb I guess.

Ever since the Saving Private Ryan Oscar telecast, I've become less and less interested in the Oscar process. I usually record it and watch some of the program. However, this year I've felt totally disengage from this year's program. Maybe, it was because I can't stand Ellen D. Or that perhaps, I've only seen 3 out of the 9 Best Picture nominees. Probably a combination of both along with my distaste in this film industry process.

I'm having a hard time getting in the right frame of mind to view 12 Years a Slave. I have The Wolf of Wall Street on BD preorder. I'll probably watch Dallas Buyer's Club and Nebraska at some point. The rest of the BP nominees I have little interest in seeing.

Yeah. I went back and played it a couple of times before I actually listened to her performance. It wasn't even close.

It wasn't too obvious when Ellen came out after Menzel was done and announced her name two or three times...

Besides the selfies and the pizza delivery, were there any genuine surprises in the winners for the main 18 categories? I got the original screenplay wrong (but I wasn't that big a fan of "Her", so my pick was tainted).
