From thedigitalbits' Planet of the Apes Review:
Also included on Disc One are cast and crew bios, THX-Optimode test signals, features that will work only in Nuon-enhanced DVD players (like "viddies" and various zoom points during the film)...
What are Nuon enhanced DVD players?

That's stupid. Like the Dvdfile article says, it'll be filed next to DIVX soon. How are they going to make this mainstream with on a few players that are NUON enhanced?

Nuon has been as big a disaster as DTS music. Does anyone even own a Nuon Enhanced DVD player?

Well, I'm sure their plan was for the Nuon chip to be so popular that it became a standard feature on all players. I think the technology is probably good (never saw it in person), but without support it will die.
They probably suffer from a chicken-or-the-egg scenario. Why should consumers buy a Nuon-enhanced player with so few titles that use it? Why should studios create Nuon-enhanced discs without a sufficient number of players? And around it goes.

I've seen some DVD-ROM games (Myst, Riven) which have versions that can be played set-top with Nuon-chip players.

Basically Nuon started out as a DVD based game system, from suprise! Trip Hawkins, ex head of EA and 3DO. Then they figured out that they'd fail (again), and transformed it into a DVD extender. No one wanted it, and now they're stuck again [IMG]
I think Fox signed some kind of deal to use it on X # of titles or something
