I wish I could meet that person who built that in real life so I could point and laugh.

I would just wait until the next generation of chips comes out to break the 5GHz mark.

There's no real practical use for this in a home PC.

do you really think the point of the project is JUST to break 5 GHz? when the 5 GHz chips come out, the project would be to break 10 GHz.

How about running Doom 3 at 1920x1080 with all details turned to maximum at 120fps? [IMG]

I don't see how the experiment is any more worthy of ridicule than souping up a car engine, tweaking speaker positions or even climbing a mountain.

It's been done just to show how far it can be pushed.

Of course there's no practical value, but isn't that the case with most pastimes? Do you think the guys who pour liquid oxygen on BBQ grills give a thought to practicality? Of course not. The liquid O2 guys do what they do because giant fireballs are fun.

The point is not to break 5GHz, that is irrelevant. The point is that they found an excuse to use liquid nitrogen. [IMG]

By the way, just to underscore the sheer impracticality of all of this, I seriously doubt any of that equipment will survive this experiment by very long.

Making a car bounce is just as useless... but each have their fans. To thread crap because you don't see the challenge is rediculous.

While I don't see a practical purpose to this, I can still admire the way they went about testing the limits of the technology is impressive. If we hadn't tested the airplane, we never would have gotten to the moon. Impressive.

Perhaps right now there isn't. But soon.

You're right... I should rephraze my statement to read: There's no practical use for my PC. [IMG]

I don't need 5GHz to surf the HTF.

*shrug* You were absolutely correct. There is no practical use for this. The only thing you did wrong was assume that there's something wrong with being thoroughly impractical. [IMG]

I'm sure most modders and overclockers are well aware that what they do has no practical value. But then, if people were concerned with practicality, the world might never have seen things like this:

    *ahem*merge! [IMG]

There is a LOT of pratical use with more CPU cycles to throw around, I see you guys don't do a lot of DV editing. The most annoying thing is waiting 10 minutes for a 5-minute 640x480 project to encode.

The thing is that this thing sucks. It must CONSTANTLY be topped off with Liquid Nitrogen. It's not as if it's been cooled to 5ghz stable, so there is no practical use other than to show that it's been done. That's not a thread crap, that's a fact. Show me a processor that's been made USABLE at 5ghz and I'm interested.

It's an urban legend. Very popular with the apple crowd, of course.

Actually, I think this is so that you can finally run the Terminator 2 WM9 HDTV clip without any stuttering.

Or is could be so that you could encode a file like that in less than a week.

    No practical use.

You can't cool a chip with liquid nitrogen for any extended period of time because it kills the chip. Just as they are not designed to run at high temperatures, they are not designed to withstand such low temperatures either.
