Damn what a relief... after double checking the connections, it was a source cable that was on again, off again from the digital cable box for the analog out.
(I almost shipped my AVR out for service, across the country):b
Thought I would maybe share that as a lesson to someone else who is certain it has to be the pre/pro or receiver.
Double (no) TRIPLE check your connections, at the input to the receiver AND from the outputs.
(now I've got to reset ALL my calibrations for every single mode after trying the master reset. Hell, I deserve it)
