I was watching Last of the Mohicans last night in DTS format on the disc through my Yamaha HTR-5790 set to DTS surround standard. I noticed that through the narrative scenes that the voices were quite low. It was as if the volume had gone down a bit. Then a battle scene would come on and the sound was much much louder. Is there something I need to change to get the voices to come up without compromising the sound of the rest of the movie?

For the record, I'm running a 5.1 setup currently. I'm waiting for my room to be completed before I mount the rears for 7.1.

Make sure all of the speakers are calibrated - thats number 1.

Once calibrated properly, many like to turn up the center channel a little to help with the dialog.

If that doesn't work you can try using the dolby digital compression technique, usually called nighttime listening or something like that. However, this only works for DD not DTS.
