    I have been buying dvds since they were released and never paid too much attention to anamorphic vs. non-anamorphic. I have recently bought a projector and have found out that there is quite a difference. I was wondering if someone could point me to a list of non-anamorphic dvds and if any of these have been re-released as anamorphic. Any help would be great. Thanks

    I don't know of a particular maintained list, but here's the "popular" titles that I know to be non-anamorphic:

    * Titanic
    * The Abyss
    * True Lies
    NOTE: These are all James Cameron titles!

    * Star Trek: Generations (Anamorphic SE coming in September)

    * Armageddon

    * Short Circuit

    * Mrs. Doubtfire

    * Beneath the Planet of the Apes, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, Battle for the Planet of the Apes, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes

    * Battlestar Galactica (The theatrical widescreen release of the pilot)

    * Enemy of the State

    * Romancing the Stone

    * Disney's Lady and the Tramp (This is particularly tragic since this is a 2.35:1 presentation.)

    * Disney's The Little Mermaid

    * Disney's Mulan (Anamorphic SE due in October.)

    * Disney's Hercules

    In addition, the first releases of the following titles were non-anamorphic, but are now available with anamorphic enhancement:

    * Planet of the Apes (Original)
    * Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
    * Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
    * Disney's A Bug's Life

    ... And I'm sure there are many more ...

    Thanks for the info. I think Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and Fargo were also non-anamorphic but now have been re-released with anamorphic transfers. Can anyone confirm this for sure?

    I'm not sure about those titles.

    Here's a general rule of thumb on non-anamorphic titles:

    * Most Paramount titles released from November 1998 through August 1999 were non-anamorphic. (Paramount's first wave of DVD's, in October 1998, *were* anamorphic. But that was it until around August 1999.)

    * Most Fox titles released prior to November 1999.

    * All Disney titles released prior to January 2000.

    Curiously, these same three studios provided software for Circuit City's DIVX format from late 1997 through mid 1999!

    Also, The Mask (Jim Carey) is probably the only New Line release that is non anamorphic.

    There are still tons of titles that really could use the Anam-WS transfer but we're probably never going to see it.

    In addition to those already mentioned, Thelma and Louise, the Manchurican Candidate and the Great Escape originally NA but rereleased with an anamorphic transfer.

    Other widescreen NA dics I own, which as far as I know have not been released anamorphically:

    From Dusk Till Dawn
    The Doors
    Fort Apache: The Bronx
    Bound
    Dead Man Walking

    The Game
    The Poseidon Adventure
    The Towering Inferno
    Psycho
    Spaceballs
    Thief
    Tremors

    For a list, do an advanced search on the widescreen review search and specify non anamorphic. I got 779 results.

    I don't know if mine is anamorphic or not, but it's filmed in an aspect ratio that fills a widescreen, so I didn't pay much attention, and it has a DTS track so, oh well.

    Nightmare before Christmas is 1.66:1 4x3 lbx...and presents ugly issues for 16x9 viewers because zooming it really seems to cut off lots of image content that you'd want to see (don't tell me about theaters cropping or whatever...when I zoom the DVD it *LOOKS* like I'm losing more than I should...and I shouldn't have to).

    I know that P.F. and Fargo were both re-released 16x9. The new Fargo is excellent. However the 16x9 P.F. is a pretty ugly DVD and is marred with excessive EE...if you have a projector it wouldn't be pretty!

    Nope, it's not anamorphic, but it's only like 1.66:1

    Ok, see I have my dvd player set to 4x3 full output, so, the bars would not show on the sides, and it didn't say this film has been modified to fit the screen, so I assumed it was widescreen. Thanks for the info.

    X Files: Fight the Future was non anamorphic but was corrected in the dts version.

    Predator was too but now the 2 disc set makes the whole thing moot.

    The current release of Clockwork Orange I believe
    is also non-anamorphic.

    About Pulp Fiction- I don't know about EE (I don't
    have a 16x9 set yet), but the color transfer is much
    better on the 2 disc SE.

    The title of this thread should be changed to reflect that you're referring to Region 1 only, as a majority of the titles listed in this thread are available anamorphic, just not in North America.
