I got a Dish 6000 with the 8VSB module for HDTV OTA decoding. The module has a cooling fan built into it that whines like a siren continuously even when the rest of my equipment is off. Is this a defective unit or just defective design?

I'm not sure why it's noisy, but it runs all of the time because your receiver is actually on unless you unplug it. Turning it off just turns off the video/audio outputs.

It must be defective.
I put a RS SPL meter up to the back of the 8VSB and get a reading of 56db.
It is very quiet.
If you can't return the 8VSB there is a mod that slows down the fan speed with a resistor.
I believe details of the mod can be found at AVS or HTS forums, can't remember exactly.

Terry,

Actualy it is pretty common for the fans the be loud on the module. You can do the resistor thing to quiet it down. It works well.
