I went to order a Denon 5900 universal DVD player today and my dealer called his Denon Rep and was told Denon is out of 5900's and will not be making anymore until the new 5910. The 5910 will not be stores until November.

I asked about the new 3910 and it will not be in stores until mid-end of September plus the rep told me if I want a 5900 the 3910 is a step down. It was explained to me that the new 3910 has most of the same chips and electronics as the 5900 except the 5900 has a much better chassis, transformer, and transport. I WANT THE 5900!!!!

So...with that in mind I went shopping today and found the Integra universal DVD player and the Pioneer 59i universal player. Compared to the Denon 5900 what do you all think?

Actually I had read in a few places that the 5910 wasn't coming until around March 2005. I wouldn't hold your breath for November 2004 though. I will see if I can dig up some links on the dates.

the pioneer elite and the integra arent in the same league as the 5900. its a great player. however, ive been assured the performance of the 3910 is the same as the 5900. ive got a disc from denon right now that has nice big pictures and more details regarding the unit, and it looks just as good. but the build quality isnt as good. we will see...

the 5900 performs as good as the 9000 did, and its almost half the weight... maybe this is the same thing.

Ya I got a cheapy Pioneer 563A to tide me over until the 3910's are for sale. Let's hope SACD is allowed over Denon-Link by that time.

what exactly does Denon link do? and why is it so desirable? I know I can probably do a search.. but just thought you might give me a straight answer without having to read thru the marketing line.

thanks! ;)

Just to muddy things further, I had heard that the 5910 was coming in Jan, and I heard mid to end of Aug for the 3910.

Denon Link is Denon's version of iLink. Except that so far, Denon doesn't have permission from Sony to pass SACD, so it can only pass DVD-A, so IMO it is essentially worthless. But Denon is still trying...

Personally, I don't think the 59AVi is in the same league as the Denon. The Denon has a better deinterlacer and a better (practically nonexistant) layer change. But the 5900 has the macroblocking problem. I would say however, that I think the Pioneer is a better value.

The Integra is based on the 59AVi, but supposedly will have a better deinterlacer, but will list for $2500.

There is also a Marantz 9500 coming too. Supposed to have much better video than the 8300/8400.

I will be pluging my universal DVD player video into a Sim2 HT 300 Link and the audio will go to a McIntosh MX135 pre-pro and McIntosh amps. Denon Link does me no good anyway plus the McIntosh has excellent D/A converters though digital coax out of the DVD player.

I'm either wait for a 5900 to go on ebay/audiogon or buy a 3910. Personally it wouldn't surprise me to see a 3910 outperform a 5900. Then a few months down the road if the 5910 interests you, then upgrade.
