Just got this in an e-mail from Amazon..

Greetings from Amazon.com.

We've recently learned from our supplier that the item you requested to be
notified about, Segway Human Transporter (also known as "Ginger" or "IT"),
will not be available in the foreseeable future.

From what I gather, the company is waiting for legislation to be passed at the state level to allow Segways to be used as an extension of the pedestrian. They don't want limitations on where they can be used and have to deal with licensing, etc...
See this press release from August 14th:
http://www.segway.com/aboutus/press_...pr_081402.html
My guess is that they will begin general consumer sales within six months to a year.
BTW, did you see that the three Segways that were up for auction at Amazon went for $160,100.00, $104,100.00, and $100,600.00.

The company is gearing up for industrial and public service sales first. The more they can sell of the industrial model to these potential customers, the less expensive the consumer - a smaller vesion- will probably be. With the economy being what it is there's no need to rush into things. The company is gradually making headway overseas as well with deals for distribution in Europe. Segway has a site where you can keep up on Press Releases, etc. and receive automatic emails from time to time:

The just lost the VP of Marketing and things have not been going well I have heard in terms of sales projections.

Too much hype can be a bad thing sometimes.

nah the RS250 would be more my style, or even an rs125 chesterfield :)
I dunno how the 50 compares to a scoot, but with 7.5 hp on tap it's pretty darn slow, even with a 70cc kit you're lookin at 12hp

I just got a follow-up e-mail:
Greetings from Amazon.com.
You recently received an e-mail from us regarding the Segway Human
Transporter (also known as "Ginger" or "IT"). This e-mail was sent
accidentally by an automated system and the information in it is
incorrect.
In fact, there is no new information on Segway's
availability. Consumer versions of Segway Human Transporters are
currently being piloted in various communities throughout the U.S.
The Segway HT is expected to be released to the general consumer
market in 2003.
We apologize for the confusion. We will keep your e-mail address on
our list of customers who wish to be notified about this item.
Sincerely,
Amazon.com Customer Service
