Reading the Moulin Rouge box set post, someone brought up the Nixon SE. Whatever happened to that? It was rumored to come out last April! I didn't want to buy the entire Oliver Stone box set and would never have sold my Nixon SE LD set had I realized that this would be postponed forever (a mistake I'm not likely to ever make again).

Yeah, I've been waiting and waiting for the Nixon SE, too. I don't know what could have happened to it.

It was released in the Loiver Stone box set and was supposed to be released in March I think, its WAY late. They delayed it and never gave it another release date, I got one off of ebay. Its STILL non amamorphic but the added scenes are fantastic.

it's a great film and the added scenes really add A LOT to the film, unlike JFK where i thought the added scenes deadened the pace and were unnecessary.
unfortunately, the tranfer is NOT good. not just your average non-anamorphic disc, there are places (not just with the additional scenes) that just look plain bad even on smaller sets like mine.

Yes, Jon, that is exactly what I did also. I ended up going for it on ebay--and got it!!!
Sadly, yes, the picture is not very well. Howeer, I still have, and will hang on to, the SE LD box set.
What I primarily picked up Nixon for: the insightful (as always, IMHO) Oliver Stone commentaries and his 60-minute interview with Charlie Rose surrounding the Nixon movie.
Ironically, I gave up the original Nixon DVD to pick up the SE LD box set and all of its extra scenes and its handsome packaging versus the bare-bones DVD.
Truly a gem of a movie, IMHO. Surely a DVD worth having, the Nixon SE DVD, IMHO.

Well, it's my hope that the delay in releasing the special edition is becasue they're remastering the awful video.

I just saw a 2 disc version of the Dir Cut at Best Buy.
Its labeled as the Collectors Series and just says "widescreen edition". Nothing about a new transfer.
I have the snapper from the Oliver Stone Set- the added footage is VHS quality. Why the hell did Buenta Vista delay this for so long and not even bother to create a new transfer??? [IMG] [IMG]
Anyway its out there for anyone interested

I loved the theatrical cut of the film; I never saw the extended cut. Is there extra footage worthwhile?

I think the added scenes are excellent.

The Dick Helmes/CIA Scene,Hoover at his daughters wedding, and when Nixons threatens his board really stand out. There are a few more and nothing feels like a throw away. Its all good stuff.

They've added a DTS track to the separate edition of Nixon SE so it is better than the one in the Stone box set. Haven't seen the disc myself, just read it somewhere.

I wonder if the DTS track hurts the picture quality considering this is a 3 1/2 hour film now.

Unfortunately, whilst the audio was remastered to include a DTS track, the video (which actually did need to be remastered) was left alone. Consequentially, the DVD looks so terrible as to be almost unwatchable on any decent size widescreen setup.

    Refresh.......

Anybody have both versions of the Nixon DVDs? (The new SE + the non-SE version.)

    What are the major differences?

Amazon claims the first one (non-SE) has a Making-Of feature on it. But the box cover does not show this. ???

    Is the SE 2 discs?

    Thanks for any info.

Amazon is wrong then. The original Nixon DVD has NO extras on it whatsoever, and of course it is the theatrical cut of the film. And, yes, the SE is 2 discs. If only they hadn't done a hack job of remastering for the SE... it's really inexplicable.

Well, it's the SE scenes that look so bad, Dave, not the whole thing. That's only about 10 percent of movie. The picture quality of the rest is identical to the standard DVD.

I have yet to see Nixon - and that's coming from someone who greatly admires Stone. As all versions of the film on DVD are sub-standard, I have refrained from parting with my hard-earned clams.
I'm hoping for a high-quality 2 Disc Special Edition DVD. Will it happen any time soon? Probably not.
