Couple of years? My father was getting faxes from famous Nigerian doctors at his office in the 1980s. But it really is surprising that more people don't know about it, considering how widespread it is.

I have one e-mail address that I've had since 1996 or so that must receive half a dozen 419 solicitations every day.

Interesting. I received one of these emails the other day:

"Hello seller,
I am interested in this items and i am willing to
send this items to my clients in Africa, which is
needed urgently there and i will like to purchase 4 of
this items, so i will like to pay you with Western
Union Money Transfer and i will also add the sum of
$70 to your total amount, so if you are willing to
sell this items to me, pls kindly reply back with your
name and address, with total amount of the items plus
shipping fees to my clients in Africa.
Best Wishes and Merry Xmas and Happy New Year.
Owen Larr"

I didn't bother responding, because the email body was fishy and the signature name didn't match the name attached to the email address, the first name of which was mispelled in the address.

Well what I do when they send me this kind of email, I respond like this, Just in case there may be a legitimate
offer made. I doubt that there ever will be because the kind of stuff I am selling is over there and probably cheaper cause there isnt shipping charges with it. But here is my reply to them when they email me:

Hello

The items you are interested in is still available, BUT do to the fact you are not in the U.S. or Canada I have a couple of rules if we decide to do business with each other:

1. Any funds sent by you or any of your clients will
remain in my bank until they have cleared, It doesnt
matter what type of funds are being sent.

2. Only send the funds for the items I have for sale that
you are interested in plus shipping charges. I will
not forward any money, funds or anything to you or a
3rd party

3. Once the funds have cleared my bank then, You can have
these items picked up or shipped. That is up to you as
the buyer.

If you can agree with my terms, then please email me back
with how you are intending to transact with me.

Thanks
Dave

Doing that, The ones with bad intentions never email a 2nd time, And I never hear from them again :)

So today I check my T-Mobile voicemail, and hear "You have two fax messages". Huh? On my cell phone?! I must be behind the times, never having heard of such a feature. I pressed "1" or something to print the message, at which point i was prompted for a fax number, which I provided.

Well, the fax turned out to be one of these scams (from Ghana actually). I suspect this fax thingie cost me a buck or two, I have certainly learnt my lesson.

These fuckers are getting more resourceful everyday - certainly more than I when it comes to the latest gizmos.

Jaaaayyzus.
