Just picked up a copy of Stargate on R2 and was surprised to find it having a DTS 5.1 track included on it, together with a 5.1 DD english and german track. In addition I was even more pleasantly surprised to find that it included a 16x9 (2.35) transfer to boot. Is this a new transfer of this film as i remember the R1 being 1.85?
Anyway transfer looks good, although does look slightly dated and not up to par with the most recent stella transfer's and the sound in DTS was good too.
One more thing while I am on the subject of R2 DVD's, has anyone taken a look at the Field of Dreams 16x9 transfer yet that has been released recently. I was never very impressed with the LBX R1 trasfer and would like to know whether it is worth replacing.
cheers.

The R1 is definitely 2.35:1...
But how is the transfer anyway? Does it have as much EE as the region 1 version, or even worse, is it an upsample of the R1 transfer?

The two region 1 editions are definately in 2.35:1 widescreen aspect ratio, the same applies to the DTS and DD laserdiscs releases. All these releases had misprints of aspect ratio measurement which ARTISANT(formerly LIVE) does not bother to change.

I think it is best i refer to a recent review of the R2 dvd in the latest home cinama choice as i am not the best at this sort of thing really as i am projecting a 7ft image of this dvd on one of sony's budget projectors, although the image is real nice IMO.
Anyway they say 'On DVD (Stargate) it really proves its worth with a striking picture transfer, full of pinpoint detail and bold vibrant colours. The DTS 5.1 soundtrack is the best, providing assured, thunderous bass and lots of surround detail. Superb'
Anyway hope that helps. BTW is the R1 16x9, sorry bout the mistake about the 1.85, that was how it was listed on my online dvd site.

The picture quality on this disc is really good except for the additional scenes which have been put in to make it a Director's Cut - the difference in quality of these really stands out as they are not as good

Wow did not realize the R1 was not 16x9. Well in that case for those that live in R1 i can really reccomened getting this DVD not only for the 16x9 transfer but also the DTS track to, that is of course if you have the capability of playing PAL dvd's. I am running a 7ft image and really benefit from 16x9 disks.
Anyway thanks for that Mark.

I owned the prior R1 non-enhanced version of Stargate, and I absolutely loathed the picture quality.
Just recently picked up the R2 Collector's Edition with the new 16x9 transfer. The picture quality is absolutely astounding! Truly excellent work! I view movies on a 7' wide screen from a CRT projector, and there is a world of difference from the R1. Big problem with the added scenes, though. They really look like they were taken from a VHS tape! Quality goes from almost reference to GARBAGE on a scene cut. I only wish I could watch the film without the added scenes.
In terms of audio, I prefer to stick with the DD5.1 tracks, and this is a high quality track. Obviously not with the dynamics of some newer soundtracks, but very good.
