ok, as you will be able to tell, Im completly new to this , anyway, This amp has some direct inputs.. "6ch direct in" there is 6 inputs on the back, one for each channel.. now is that for dvd players with a suround decoder in it? basicly there is a cable for each channel.. if so, What is the optical cable for? I was under the impression that optical cable was for Dolby dts etc.. Please explain (if this makes any sence at all)

The multi-channel inputs are for using a DVD player that has an onboard (built-in) Dolby Digital or DTS Decoder. They are also useful for new formats like SACD and DVD Audio.

Most DVD players do not have built in decoders so the optical cable is used to tranfer the digital audio signal from the DVD player to your receiver which has the decoder built in.

Hope this helps

Bill nailed it - the optical cable is used for DD and DTS signal transmission.

To clarify what Bill said about SACD and DVD-audio: These must be decoded in the player, due to copyright protection. So if you want to listed to either of these in all their 6-channel glory, you've gotta connect all six cables!
