Next generation HD stb's getting less expensive (1 Viewer)

Samsung has announced a new HDTV tuner with a MSRP of $399, supposedly available this June. It will replace their current SIR-T150 OTA-only box. Hopefully other manufacturers will follow with new products at similarly reduced prices.

Looks like the SIR-T150's replacement has one less HD component video outs, compared to the SIR-T150.

Does firmware ever need to be updated, with HD-only stb's like the SIR-T150?

Yes. I have updated the firmware on my SIR-T150 a couple of times, and then "downgraded" the firmware a third time. My initial firmware version suffered from an audio dropout problem that was fixed in version 1.63. I then decided to apply version 1.81, but my box then suffered from occasional signal breakups when first powered on (for about 10-15 minutes). I reinstalled version 1.63 and the tuner has been working fine.

FYI, Samsung posts the firmware updates on its website, unlike Panasonic for its RP-91 DVD player.
