Did a search and couldn't find the answers...

Is there anyway to tell from the packaging all of the format options (stereo, 5.1, etc.) that are available on an SACD or DVD-A?

    Are DVD-A recordings mostly multi-channel?

    Are there stereo-only DVD-A recordings?

Are most SACDs stereo only or just most older recordings (Rolling Stones)?

    Thanks!

"Is there anyway to tell from the packaging all of the format options (stereo, 5.1, etc.) that are available on an SACD or DVD-A?"

Look on the back of the product for the available mixes. Usually starts off "This disc will play one of 3 ways...."

    "Are DVD-A recordings mostly multi-channel?"

Yes, but they also have a hi-rez stereo track.

    "Are there stereo-only DVD-A recordings?"

I don't have any but I am not sure.

"Are most SACDs stereo only or just most older recordings (Rolling Stones)?"

Most of the older recordings are stereo only (many of these are hybrids with a CD layer as well).

Rob, many DVD-A discs, particularly Silverline titles, do not have a stereo mix. Hopefully that will change when CD layers or sides are added. If you look closely at SACD's it's not too hard to figur out if it's got a M/C mix. Non-Sony titles usually have a big sticker on front. Sony M/C titles come in a gold trimmed slipcase. Silver trimmed slipcases indicate stereo. Older releases came in paper slipcases. Best wishes!
