Walmart and Target. I have heard of 14 and 20 hour units going cheap at both these stores, but in my area, they have been sold out. After you get one of these, you can upgrade to a bunch of hours. I've been half heartily looking, I want to try to do an upgrade myself, but I have so many projects going on, it is not a top priority.
With the $250 budget, you will need to do a monthly subscription, unless you find one for $1.
    Good Luck,

You want the cheapest unit, preferably with a single disk drive - if you are handy with PC's.
You can buy a Phillips HDR-212 20hr unit for $199 new - or less on clearance. Then if you like it you can then add more disk drives - up to 250hrs of recording time.
If you want a DirecTiVo get the cheapest unit - they all ship with the same amount of space from the factory and are fairly easy to upgrade too.

    Bob,
I had heard about this modification. Is there anything special that needs to be done? Is this a warrantee annihilator? One of my biggest concerns with tivo is the lack of recording time. Everyone says "60 hours is more than enough" but at the highest quality, that DRASTICALLY reduces the time for recording.

Adding a drive definitely voids the warranty. it is a pretty straight-forward process though. I had a 30 hour philips that I sold, and I currently have 3 DirecTiVo satellite receivers. I just dropped a 60 GIG drive into one to make it an 86 hour unit. Note that since these record the compressed directv bitstream taht is 86 hours at perfect quality! these are definitely the way to go if you have directv. The only downside is that they do not have MPEG encoders so you can not record from any other source, so no cable or antennae.

I decided to get the tivo at this link. It is a 30-hour tivo for $250 with free shipping. Couldn't pass up that deal.

Seems like a good deal. I really want that 60hr unit, but even at $500, it's a lot to justify. If anyone else sees any further deals, or knows where to search, please let me know.

It's a killer deal to those of us who paid $500 for 14 hour units 2 years ago!
