Greetings, I was just blessed with a Yamaha RX-A720 Reviver for Christmas. I have it hooked up to my Cable Box, TV and BlueRay player. My wife is asking if we can connect our Aiwa Compact Disk Stereo System, CX-ZR525, to the reciever so we can eliminate the Aiwa speakers. I have looked at the back of the Aiwa and find connections for Phono In, Video/Aux In, Surround Speakers, Sub Woofer and a CD digital out. The Aiwa plays CD's, Cassette Tapes, and records. I have found out that the CD digital out only outputs the CD audio. Is there some way to use the Aiwa speaker output as an input to the Yamaha receiver? Thanks in advance for your help!

You can definitely connect them, the CD digital output is the right connection to use. Unfortunately, the Aiwa manual doesn't give much information on how that is handled (does it route just the CD or the tape also; does it shut off the Aiwa's speakers). But it won't cost you much to try it, an optical cable is cheap. I'll add that the only reason for trying is the CD carousel or if you want to play your tapes. Otherwise, you can just play your CDs using your BR player.

You are better off buying a cassette deck. You can find them all over the place on Ebay. You can even find remote control tape decks. Having not looked(completely) at any of the RX-A manuals I have no idea if you can program another brand to work with the remote...but a Yamaha tape deck w/remote won't be tough to find. Same goes with the turntable. Get a real one and enjoy your record collection all over again.

Hi, I tried the Digital optical connection and it only connected the CD player output. The other features like cassette and turntable were not transferred to the receiver. The optical also does not turn off the Aiwa speakers.

If you want to try a high level/rca adapter...sure. But they suck. http://www.amazon.com/Gino-Speaker-Level-Converter-Black/dp/B005FE0DQ2/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1357509406&sr=1-3&keywords=line+level+rca Basically attach that to the speaker terminals of your Aiwa. Turn it ALL THE WAY UP. The sound quality is going to suck and I'm not going to guarantee how long the Aiwa is going to last before it takes a dump...cause you have it turned all the way up.
