hi guys my name is jim i live in bakersfield,ca
and have become very interested in home theatre systems and am very eager to start. my HT will only be used for dvds

although i plan on evetually going all out and spending thousands on a home theatre system, i dont have to much money to spend at the moment.

my goal is to build a home theatre for around 1,000 dollars i would like to buy a projector (maybe ebay best of the generic?)and a home theatre in a box, i know it wont be the most impressive but just something to start with and watch dvds with.

2 weeks ago i purchased a Philips Home Theater Audio System w/ Upconverting DVD, HTS3565D/37 from walmart and its already pausing on new dvds and cutting out on sound so i wan to return it for something else.

what other HT IN box can you guys recommend? for under $250?
weither it be online, bestbuy, walmart and any other of those stores?

As for projectors i found one on ebay (Infocus-LP500-XGA-HD-Big-Screen-Home-Theater-Projector)
im not sure if its a peice of junk or worth the money? and i have been reading up on all the important number for projectors lumens,contrast,etc.. im no expert but slowly learning.

any help appreciated
thank you in advanced!!

Welcome to the forum Jimmy.

Your questions will be better answered in different parts of this forum. The projector question goes in the display section while the HTiB question can go in the speakers section.

You can come back to this thread when you want to start construction on the room or building parts of the system like speakers or subs.

We can salvage a little bit here though. What are you going to use for a projector screen? It looks like you are tieing up your entire budget on sound and a projector. Retail screens can cost upwards of $1,000. I built my 103" screen for a total of $75 and a weekend's time. And most of that was waiting for paint to dry between coats.

I would NEVER buy a projector from Ebay. I don't think you save any money with a HTIB system. I paid $90 for 3 pairs of KLH speakers on sale at Best Buy, and $79 for a Sony subwoofer. I use one pair for the front, one pair for rear surround, and one for center channel speaker. Then you can buy an upconverting DVD player for about $80. And I painted a DIY screen for about $40.

There is maybe one HT in a box I would recommend, but it's pushing around $699 I beleive. A friend of mine picked up an Onkyo system, which is actually fairly impressive for HTIB. Watch Best buy, as I've seen this same system as low as $499 on sale.
