I have a several guys building smaller matching rear surrounds.

One guy is using 6 woofers and 6 tweeters and is building them into his walls.

Another is using 4 woofers and 4 tweeters.

I have also built a custom matching center for one guy too.

All have pros, cons, limitations, and advantages. I have yet to feel good enough about releasing something because different applications and levels of acceptability differ to greatly from person to person. Few want the same thing.
Danny, my purpouse setup would be in a 20 by 20 room with 10 foot ceilings.

You spoke of a "custom" center, how does that compare to the VMPS LRC?
And as for surrounds, do you think I cna maybe make an AV-1 into surrounds?

Any suggestions?

I do have a lot of customers that use A/V-1's for their rear surround speakers.

You can get away with different speakers for rear surrounds. After all what do they play, sound effects and noises... ambience, background noise, etc.

While we're talking about these different line arrays... does anyonw know how the expensive RD-series (single driver) ribbons compare to the Neo 8 and others used in these kits? I heard Pete's RD50 dipoles and with the exception of possibly needing some EQ, they were absolutely amazing.
I believe that Parts Express sells them.

Hey Michael,

I think most of the info you will find on the RD-50 and 75's
show that they roll off starting around 18Khz.. That's fine
for some and unacceptable for others.. That's why if you
want them to extend past 18Khz I think a SuperTweeter would
need to be integrated somewhere.. I think that's why most
guys that do LA's with the BG's use the Neo's since they do
extend past 20Khz.

I think BG even makes a larger pannel with a supertweeter
already integrated?? (PE should have it listed)..

Michael,

"Problematic" depends on the user I guess.. If you can
accept that they do roll off the highs somewhat then I don't
think there is any problem at all.

But if a person is hell bent on having +/- 1Db from 20Hz to
20Khz they would either need a supertweeter and a more
elaborate crossover (plus some hellatious subwooferage).

I certainly am not the elctronics wiz here and I am sure
that Danny or Jim or John J. or someone else could elaborate
more on what can be done with the 50's and 75's to even the
higher response out.. Maybe a good solution would be active
equalization with something like the DBX DriveRack or the
similar version from Behringer or something from Marchand
where you could boost 18Khz and up.. Not the ideal solution
though.
