Newbie.. HDMI chord and Video Question!! (1 Viewer)

hey guys, i hope im in the right spot!..sorry if im not, but, i have a question!..... i have an Panasonic hdtv with a sony dvd reciever. my reciever doesnt have an hdmi port, but my laptop does (which has a hd dvd player) so i was going to hook up my laptop to my tv, via hdmi, but how would i go about getting the surround sound to work on my dvd reciever if the hdmi isnt hooked up to it? im not a very tech-e person, but the reciever does have a digital optical out, as well as my laptop, and all 3 units have S- video... i dont know if that helps! but any help would be most appreciated, thank you!

HDMI from the laptop to the TV for video, digital optical from the laptop to the receiver for audio. By the way, the optical on your receiver should be a digital optical in, not a digital optical out.
