Component Input Question
I have a 52” RCA model R52WH74 TV. That has the following inputs.
Ports Description: • Composite Input
• Composite Video Inputs + S-video + L/R Audio 2
• HD Component (YPrPb) Video + L/R Audio 2, SYNCROSCAN
• DVI 1
• RF Input 2
• L/R/Subwoofer Variable Outputs 1
• Video + Fixed L/R Audio Out 2
• Front Audio/Video 1 + S-video
I would like to hook up the following: XBOX 360, PS3, Surround Sound. The surround sound is a PanasonicSC-PT 960 HTIB with the following inputs/outputs.
Input
Optical Digital Audio: - x1
FM Antenna: - Coaxial x1
Output
Analog A/V: - RCA x1
Component: - RCA x1
HDMI: - x1
Speaker: - Bare-Wire x6 Sets
Headphone: - Mini x1
I am not really sure of the best way to set things up since there is no HDMI input. I’m still in college and will have to make do with the current setup. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The standard connection has all the input devices (XBox, PS3, DVD) going to the receiver first and then from the receiver to the TV. This is so (1) the audio can be fully decoded and (2) it simplifies switching.

Your receiver, the Panosonic, is very basic and does not support additional input devices. Recommendation #1 is to return it and get something that is not so self-contained. I recommend Onkyo, as they are inexpensive and support standard home theater set-up.

Baring that, you'll just have to run the XBox and PS3 to the TV using HDMI. You can then run the audio from the TV to the receiver. The problem is that the TV will only pass a stereo signal for any input other than its own tuner. So the you'll get good sound for your DVDs (that's coming straight from the HTiB receiver and is decoded) and from TV signals. You XBox and PS3 will only have the lessor stereo playback.

It's limited, but it does support one analog stereo input + one digital DD/PCM input (apparently no DTS).

I don't know that I'd bother with HDMI (need HDMI->DVI cable) given your particular components. I don't think I'd bother hooking up the HTIB DVD to your TV either, since either of your game systems can be used to play DVDs. Easiest is just hook up each game system to one component video input on the TV. Given your only one optical in on the HTiB, you either have to swap cables or get an optical switcher to switch between the two. Either that or give up on digital audio on one of the devices, just use analog stereo.

You can hook up the TV analog output to the HTiB's aux in for sound when watching the TV tuner.

If you want to use the HTiB for DVDs (save power from not having to turn on game consoles), then get the HDMI->DVI cable to get the video to the TV.

My bad, I missed the optical input on the receiver. Given that, Steven's suggestions are the way to go. Well, except that I think both the PS3 and the XBox360 are loud; so if you watch a lot of DVDs I'd still route though the receiver. (Since you have both a PS3 and an XB360, maybe you're doing more gaming than DVD watching ...)

And I still say that if you just bought the receiver, return it.
