I'm seriously thinking about picking up a personal data recorder. I don't know much about them. Can someome tell me what I should look for when buying one, and which ones are the best value? Thanks!

The TiVo website has pdf files of the manuals for Phillips and Sony players. They contain detailed illustrations of various connection scenarios. A lot depends on how you receive your TV signal (cable, antenna, satellite).
