So me and my dad have been shopping around for new home theater system and we have decided to wait until the new year to get a new one. I have an old Onkyo tx-ds 474 reciever and some old Fisher floor speakers. I tried hooking all this up to a blu-ray player. I did this by having the hdmi going from the blu-ray player to the tv, then first I tried having an optical cable from the t.v. to the reciever and that didnt work. So then I went directly from the blu-ray optical to the reciever optical. Still no sound. I dont know if this reciever can even do this or I just did it wrong, so any feedback would be great.

thanks, mike

An optical from the BR player to the receiver should work. It won't give the highest possible sound quality, but you'll need a new receiver for that. Optical inputs (make sure you connected to an input, not an output) are usually assignable, so you have to configure or select the proper input for it to work. You also have to make sure you are selecting the digital input, not analog. They are usually different buttons.

How do i configure the inputs? the only options on the front of it are Multi chan, dvd, video1, video 2, phono, cd, and tape. I can hit one the button more than once and change it from analog to digital but ive gone through each one and none seem to work. Also what is the highest way to get sound quality?

Check the manual. If you don't still have it, go to the Onkyo web site and do a search on your model number. Most manufacturers make product manuals available as PDF files on their sites.

Joe
