Brian
Just some random thoughts/observations . . . . Spies & Lies There is duplication on this set from a number of the Alpha releases but there appears to be five episodes of "Foreign Intrigue" that have not been previously released. I'd buy the set for those eps. alone as well as "new" episodes of "The Vise." And I'm happy to see that Mill Creek minimized the number of "Mr. & Mrs. North" eps. on this set; not that I don't like that series, but there were a large number of episodes included on "Best of TV Detectives" last year. "Counterspy" is an unsold pilot (a good one, in my opinion). I've never seen "Wire Service" or "African Patrol," so looking forward to those two. What's puzzling is that the cover art for "Spies & Lies" shows Barry Nelson who appeared as James Bond in the Climax! series production of "Casino Royale," yet it's not listed. I picked that episode up on a dollar DVD at Wal-Mart earlier this year so I'm guessing that Mill Creek could have included it. Essential Family TV It's a bit top heavy on the "Ozzie & Harriet" and "Lucy Show" episodes, but there's enough material on the set to get me interested. The "Mister Ed" episode is a U.S Treasury film that's worth getting if you don't have it (and didn't appear on the official "Mister Ed" releases), but I'm somewhat surprised that Mill Creek didn't include the "Mister Ed" pilot episode that had a different cast; again, this was something I picked up on a dollar DVD at Wal-Mart and is not included on any of the official MGM sets. "Coke Time with Eddie Fisher" looks like an oddity . . . . 14:30 running time? Also glad to see "Hiram Holliday" episodes; there were two 4-ep. Canadian releases of the show about 5-6 years ago, but those are OOP. I'm real curious to see the Phil Silvers Special. Looking at the running times for both releases, there are some 29+ minute episodes, suggesting that original commercials are included (this has already been confirmed for MC's "Ozzie & Harriet" release). And that 59 minute running time for "Wire Service" has me intrigued.
Good summing up of the releases Bob, I'll be picking up both. Coke Time with Eddie Fisher as well as other shows of the time like Perry Como and Dinah Shore were 15mins. So the time is correct. Do you have the DVD title of the Climax with Casino Royal? This isn't in my collection Brian
Thanks for that update, Bob. What episodes of Passport Danger are included and how's the pq?
One Timeless media note: Red Skelton in Color is another recommended set. I've picked this up during the DD sale and have to report that the first nine shows I've watched from this set are not edited in anyway. Contain all music, stars, performances. Each run 24+ mins. I'd imagine the other two discs are the same. This release encompasses the entire 1971 season minus the Christmas show. Timeless released this on their holiday collection. Video image on these are excellent with on a slight video imperfection here or there. These are very clean color shows. Even the celebrity intro are included Johnny Carson, Dean Martin, Bob Hope and others. Those keeping track of which shows have been released on DVD can check my site below. Not only all of Red Skelton is listed but also 40+ other shows. The new Millcreek and Timeless releases are reflected in the update: index.html Brian
Brian, that's interesting about those variety shows . . . . I have no recollection whatsoever about them, especially with the 15 minute running times . . . . would like to see more of these released. The "Casino Royale" episode from Climax! was released by Digiview and was available at Wal-Mart. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any dollar DVD displays at Wal-Mart for a number of months and Digiview's web site has been "Under Construction" for at least six months (I wonder if they are still in business). There's a picture of the cover art and a single customer review at Amazon. Amazon.com: Casino Royale : Barry Nelson, Peter Lorre, Linda Christian, Michael Pate: Movies & TV Incidentally, your updated site is terrific . . . . what a great way to see what the various companies have offered in the way of some of these older series. I would like to call your attention to the "Foreign Intrigue" series. Alpha had released volume 3 of the series a while back; episodes are listed at their site: Dateline Europe (aka Foreign Intrigue) - Volume 3 - Television on DVD (2006) Starring Jerome Thor & Sydna Scott; Alpha Video : OLDIES.com Also, for "Lock-Up," Alpha is now up to Volume 4, so you may be able to add a few eps. to your list. Lock-Up - Volume 4 - Television on DVD (1959) Starring MacDonald Carey; Directed by Jack Herzberg; Alpha Video : OLDIES.com
Mike, I have not actually seen these releases yet as they are not being released until next Tuesday; I was just making some observations based on the episode listings that Brian had supplied (greatly appreciated, Brian!). Brian's episode listing for "Passport to Danger" includes the following . . . . Passport to Danger: Geneva (24:48)/ Monte Carlo (25:06) Prague (25:09)/ Rome (25:05)/ Tangiers (25:03)/ Teheran (25:02)/ Casablanca(24:53) Budapest (21:45)/ Sofia (24:55), According to Brian's site where he lists public domain episodes that have been released by the likes of Alpha, Mill Creek, Timeless and others, all of the episodes included in this new Mill Creek set have all been previously released on the other "Passport to Danger" releases by Alpha and Timeless. Again, not having seen this new release, I can't really comment on the picture quality but I thought that both the Timeless and Alpha releases were above average as picture quality goes for unrestored 16 millimeter prints; all of the "PTD" eps. from these two companies were very watchable and I'd expect that Mill Creek's eps. will be about the same.
The 1954 Version of Casino Royale was one of the 'Extras" in the Goofy 1967 Version of this Movie I bought during a "Black Friday" Sale last year!
