OMG, I just watched this with my brother on Saturday and I thought I was going to have an asthma attack from laughing so hard and so often! [IMG]

I can't believe I went this long and managed to over look this film! I always liked the Cohen Bros, Raising Arizona is one of my favorite comedies, but I just always thought this film looked too weird for me. Now, it is weird, but it's also one of the drop dead funniest films i've seen in quite awhile.

I was so impressed with it, that after it was over I immediately went out and bought it, which wasn't hard because there's a video store right around the corner that had two used copy's of the dvd for sale for 7 bucks. Great deal.

I've never heard so much all out profanity in a comedy before, they use the F word so much it makes Tony Montana in Scarface seem like a cub scout by comparison! Not complaining though, it added to the hilarity of the film. [IMG]

I've never seen Jeff Bridges like this before, he was great as 'The Dude' and John Goodman, OMG, John Goodman was like a live grenade that could go off at any moment! He stole every scene he was in, which was quite a bit.

Their are so many funny lines in the film I could spend all night typing them all! [IMG]

Anyway, just thought i'd share with you guys and gals, what a fool I was for not seeing it sooner! [IMG]

About time you saw it! Now when someone says "the dude abides" you'll understand the reference. [IMG]

I think it's a bit overrated. Then again maybe I'd enjoy it more if I were stoned each time I watched it? Kind of like watching a Cheech & Chong movie.

I just find it double funny that this film would be "too weird" -- it's not like experimental avante cinema or anything.

Glad you finally got around to it, welcome to the club of Lebowski lovers... It's you and 4 million college kids. [IMG]

Ah, bring on the Lebowski quote thread, which this is obviously about to commence. Watching some of the Return of the King commentaries recently, I remembered a reaction I had one time to Aragorn's line when Elrond first mentions the Army of the Dead: "They believe in nothing!" An Army of...Nihilists?

    "Ve believe in NUSSINK, Lebowski!"

"Nihilists! Fuck me. I mean, say what you like about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos."

Yeah, his character is based on John Milius, with whom the Coens are good friends. Arguably the best contribution to cinema Milius has ever made [IMG]

I'm not sure whether to beam proudly or resent that. [IMG]

John, now you're no longer "out of your element".

Goodman is awesome in Lebowski. As is Bridges. But Walter steals the show, truly.

"Do you see what happens? Do you see what happens when you $u#k a stranger in the @$$?"

And possibly the best line in the whole movie...

"AM I THE ONLY ONE AROUND HERE WHO GIVES A $H!T ABOUT THE RULES?!?"

Awesome. I was thinking about starting a Big Lebowski thread a week or two ago when I saw it again over Christmas with my brother. I love this movie.

One of my favorite exchanges in the movie...

"I'll take the gun from your hand, shove it up your ass and pull the trigger 'till it goes click"

    "Jesus"

"You said it, man. Nobody fucks with the Jesus."

    "8 year olds, Dude"

Watch it man, I've got a beverage here!

Now watch it about 20 more times and you'll be ready to attend your first Lebowski Fest

A couple of my favorites so far (until I learn the film by heart at least)...

    Walter
    "Is this your homework, Larry?"

    Dude
    "Ask him about the car."

    Walter
"I said is this your homework, Larry?"

    Dude
"He knows it's his fucking homework, man, just ask him about the car!"

Another (i'm paraphrasing these as I haven't memorized them yet)...

    Guy in mortuary
"How would you like to pay for that?"

    Walter
    "Pay for what?"

    Guy in mortuary
    "The recepticle."

    Dude
"Can't we just rent it for the day?"

    Walter
"This is 180 dollars. God dammit!! Just because we're berieved doesn't mean we're SAPS!!"

I'm going to watch it again probably tommorow and i'll post some more when new shit comes to light, man. [IMG]

It's definitely a classic comedy. I discovered it about four years ago, and couldn't stop watching it for a week or so. Vince is right on about College kids loving the film...I was a freshman when I found it, and soon discovered everyone at Purdue owned it [IMG]

My favorite bit of trivia about the Big Lebowski:

In the TV version of the movie, there are many edited words, seeing as the word "fuck" is used over 200 times in the movie, but the most noticible change is when John Goodman smashes the car and screams "You see what happens when you fuck a stranger in the ass?" In the TV version he says "You see what happens when you have fun with a stranger in the Alps?"

Yeah, my boss, who's a huge fan of this movie, said it was really torn up on tv, and that also when the actors are heard saying something different from the uncut version, it was actually their real voices.

I guess that The Cohen' did an alternate "network take" for the film or had the actors do additional ADR work for the tv version? That seems like alot of effort though for a realatively low budget film like this. Sheesh, with the amount of profanity that's in this movie, that's like making the film twice! [IMG]

Actually, it's "you see what happens when you FIND a stranger in the ALPS?" Same idea, but the preceding has the additional benefit of matching the lip movements.

I'm reading a Spielberg book and in the section on 1941 it is mentioned that Milius was a strong believer in the "Commie threat" at the time, as in it was only a matter of time before the Ruskies made an all-out assult on the US. [IMG]

Putting that image with Goodman's character isn't too big a stretch.
