This is potentially offensive, and I could not figure out what group this should be posted in (Software? Movies? ) but figured After Hours, because of it's nature, might be most appropriate.

A california company has come up with the idea: follow the Netflix model, except rent only DVD Porn.. *laugh* I stumbled across this by accident when I was looking at domains I would potentially buy..

Humorous! I had said to someone else that if you had the money, that would seem to be an ideal business model

I think there are already a ton of these companies out there...

I was renting standard movies on a monthly plan from NumberSlate.com and I noticed they have an option to rent adult titles for an additional fee. Same model, keep the movies as long as you want, create a wishlist, etc. That is just one example.

Yeah, it took me three or four rentals before I realized that they were porno's.[IMG]

Plus the disks were a little sticky. Should I worry about that damaging my DVD player?:b

It seems like their name should be www.istroke.com

At least then it ewould seem more honest. [IMG]

I can't rent porn, I have to buy it- I always want to go back and study the videography and dialogue.

*laugh* I won't kid, I'd join right up, why not? But, no, I'm one of those domain squatter types.. I'll buy up about 30-40 domains and then sell them off. Good side business. Plus, it's interesting speculation I enjoy.

(hell, at one point I owned censurebobknight.com and a few other really goofy ones.. but the ones that don't sell you let lapse)

I'm sure someone could refit an automatic dishwasher to handle rental porn DVD returns!

*shrug* well, you can hate it, but actually, most of the time, it's done with solid reason. For example, since I work with a lot of ISPs, we already host a few hundred domains.

What happens is, as a pre-measure, we look for other names in the same industry..

So, if we have several mortage companies, we will look for variations on their name, or variations on their concept (kansas-mortages/etc.) which later we can offer to them.

We're not busy gobbling them up to auction or sell to outside parties - although that has happened - most of the time, the vast majority, we buy up domains we can resell to people we already know may have an interest.

Coming up with several variations of rental is a good idea, since we already host three private, small rental stores.. coming up with domains I can sell to them at a bit of a mark up isn't a bad deal [IMG]

But, hate it all you want, since I haven't ever actually lost any money on it, and have always come out ahead, without ever buying up legitimate trademarks or goofy variations of websites that I don't host (that always bothers me, when people buy http://www.gogle.com/ etc. so they can get people with misspellings.. BAH!) I've never felt bad about it [IMG]

I guess it depends on the markup involved, but it seems pretty weak.

Well, if you're marking up and charging several thousand, you're making a killing.. I don't think I've ever had that happen. But, if you're marking up adding $19, so they pay $29 instead of the $10 that you paid, and they get the domain they want, why not?

This works especially well for all the politicians we host. As a pro-active measure, we go out of our way to book up all of the counter websites (candidatesucks.com/org/biz/etc.; ihatecandidate.com/org/biz) and then bundle them back to them. A lot of people don't have the initial forsight. Just like taking (ourbrandnamesucks.org/etc/et/c) off the market is a smart idea. [IMG]

Chris, if you are using it to make money off of politicians, I won't hold it against you. [IMG]
