Check out OneCall. They expect to have STR-DA5000ES at US$1500.00 by Sep 30, 2003 and STR-DA9000ES at US$4500.00 by Oct 31, 2003. They also indicate that DA9000ES has DVI switching. Here is a brief summary:

    Model Expected by Price
    --------------------------------------
    1000ES Jul 31, 2003 US$ 600.00
    2000ES Aug 31, 2003 US$ 800.00
    3000ES Sep 30, 2003 US$1000.00
    5000ES Sep 30, 2003 US$1500.00
    9000ES Oct 31, 2003 US$4500.00

Thanks for the scoop. I am sold on a 2000 now that I saw it has the same look as the 1000. I wish it was black but it just has such a clean look to it.

Is everyone sure that the new Sony models will not come in black ?? The new lower-end Sony receivers sold by Crutchfield offers both silver and black options. Hopefully, the "ES" models will also feature both options.

[Edit]: I did read the release at OneCall which indicates "silver" as the color. I just hope that black will be an option, too.

All of these new Sony ES receivers have an RS-232 port, except the 1000ES. Does this mean that even the 2000ES is firmware upgradable???

As far as I've been told, only the 9000 and 5000ES models will be upgradeable.

the 9000ES looks really nice and all, but sorry guys...i could *NEVER* imagine spending $4300 on a receiver. granted it has i.link and DVI switching (which are extremely rare in HT processors/receivers today), but how many people will be able to justify shelling out over $4k for this thing? you could get a really fantastic separates setup for that price!

now, i CAN imagine myself dropping more than $4k on a pair of speakers one day, or even a nice preamp or a high quality amp. but spending that much on a receiver just puzzles me.

$4,500 for the new 9000 receiver would mean an excessive amount of "buyer's remorse" for me. I don't see how I could enjoy it ... nor, do I understand how I'd be able to use all that it offered.

Just happy with my 4ES at the moment ... actaully, very pleased.

You should be able to get the 9000ES for about $2500 online which is about the price of the Denon 5803 and Pioneer 49TXi. I got my 49TX for about $2500 online. For that much your limited to Outlaw separates with alot less features and isn't upgradable. I don't think anyone pays list price anymore.

How does the ES line actually perform?

I would possibly be interested in the 3000 but have heard many disconcerting things about the ES line. Specifcally, this quote from a thread at AVS:

To let you know these new receiver will be digital amps with exception to the 1000es and since digital amps are very very efficient at like 95% I would be very suprised if the receiver didn't come close to matching what Sony claims it can.

Check out the Sony Canada site. It seems like the new STR-DA5000ES has pretty high THD:

    Surround Mode: 0.7% at 170W x 7, 8 ohm, 1kHz
    Stereo Mode: 0.09% at 150W x 2, 8 ohm, 20-20kHz

    http://www.sony.com.au/Objects/image...0_HIFICOMP.pdf

For comparison purpose, here are the THDs of TAN-9000ES:

    Surround Mode: 0.013% at 115W x 5, 8 ohm, 20-20kHz
    Stereo Mode: 0.09% at 140W x 2, 8 ohm, 20-20kHz
