Has anyone picked up the re-release of "The Return of the Pink Panther" DVD yet? If so, how does it compare to the atrocious DVD from Artisan? Please be as detailed as you can.
Michael, While far from perfect, the new transfer renders the Artisan release worthless. The new transfer has better color and detail, (seemingly) proper framing, better audio fidelity and is anamorphic. It's not quite as nice as MGM's other Pink Panther remasters, but pretty close.
The trailer and production notes are not included on the new release. Not huge losses, but the trailer would have been nice. The chapter markers appear be identical.
I'll try to provide better details on the comparison when I get time. But honestly, the new one is so much better it's not really necessary. I'd recommend just picking it up. It's available most places for under $10. Costco has it on sale this week for only $4.99 (regular $8.99 - $4 Universal instant rebate).
Mine is still in shrinkwrap. Had had no time to compare it to the Artisan release.
Glad to hear a favorable review. Hope to hear more.
This was the film that made me a Pink Panther and Peter Sellers fan. It was the first Panther film I ever saw. My parents took me to see it at the age of 12. Up until that point, I never laughed so hard at a film.
I think getting into the Panther films by the third act made it difficult liking The Pink Panther or A Shot In The Dark. They seemed primitive in comparison.
Well..enough rambling. Just happy that my first and second favorite Panther film (STRIKES AGAIN is #1) is finally done right on DVD!
