New Onkyo 9.2-Channel TX-NR787 Receiver for $799

Onkyo has announced the new 9.2-channel TX-NR787 receiver, which is available now. With an impressive feature list, the AVR also carries an unprecedented price point for a 9-channel immersive audio hub, retailing at just $799. It will deliver 9.2 channels of audio, with configurations of 5.2.4 or 7.2.2 object-based for immersive Dolby Atmos or DTS:X soundstages.

The unit supports a claimed 100 watts per channel into 8 ohms (and 220 watts per channel into 6 ohms), and also comes with THX Select Certification, so realizing its potential to provide reference theater level audio in rooms up to 2,000 cu ft. The TX-NR787 has seven HDMI inputs and two outputs, which sport all the latest video tech including 4K 60p pass-through, Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG, plus BT.2020 color space, 4:4:4 sub-sampling, 24-bit color and, of course, HDCP 2.2.

It should be noted that this beast can't be wired up as a pre-amp, as there are no pre- outs to feed your banks of power amplifiers. With that said, it's fair to assume that readers here fishing around for an AVR at this (while impressive) price/performance level, will not also be seeking out dedicated mean black power slabs for their racks.

Worthy of mention, and included here, are also Onkyo's AccuEQ onboard advanced room correction for quick home theater setup, and AccuReflex, which sets out to align audio specifically for object-based, immersive environments. As well as availability of a two-channel Zone 2 (while also delivering 5.5.2 audio in your main AV room), the AVR supports DTS Play-Fi, FlareConnect, Apple AirPlay and Google Chomecast. Built-in streaming apps include Spotify, Amazon Music Pandora, Amazon Music, Deezer, Tidal and Tunein.

So, not bad for under $800, and for anyone looking to gain entry into the object-based audio realm with all the latest gizmos, the Onkyo TX-NR787 represents a pretty compelling package.
