Last thing I wanted to do with this thread was get my favorite video store in trouble. Due to the threats of Jeff Kleist, I have removed my posts.

That's a lot of money for non-anamorphic transfers when they are being released in japan with brand new anamorphic transfers and English subtitles. Region 0 Chinese DVDs will look OK on a small TV, but they will not on any RPTV. Artifacts galore. [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

    Dan,
I may be wrong but this sounds like a bootleg. The fact that its China/region 0 sends out a red flag to me.

Can you say bootlegs? There, I knew you could.
Everything in China is not region 0. They actually code a lot of their stuff. They also don't code a lot of stuff. But the amount of licensed anime is just around a dozen plus or so, and the amount of it that's subtitled is about 3-4.
The only way, other than Princess Mononoke, to get authentic legitimate Miyazaki movies is to purchase the R2's from Japan.
Don't support bootlegs. Don't support piracy.

    This smells like bootlegs!
Disney owns worldwide video distribution, and they've only released 1 Ghibli film on DVD, and one on VHS and LD (both titles USA) with Laputa coming someday.
Japan is approaching each title every few months, with the whole lot being released by the end of 2002.

I've seen quite a few of the bootleg anime releases from HK. I've never seen a set that comes with packaging that nice. Is the DVD stats table (ie, with all the region, ntsc etc logos) accurate? On most HK pirate discs, the details on that table have little to do with reality.
Also, do they really include English subs on all the movies? Removeable? How's the spelling and grammar?

Well, I checked on this at Nausicaa.net; the best unofficial Ghibli site, and the response I got at Ghiblink was this:

    Quote:

It is NOT legitimate, and we highly recommend that you do NOT buy it. All legitimate releases are listed in our Video section [1], and future releases are listed on our Future Release Schedule page [2].

That set is absolutely a bootleg. I got fooled into buying the same bootlegger's DNA^2 collection.Their packaging is VERY professional, that's what fooled me. Once I got it, my FIRST clue it was a boot was the fact that the packaging lacked the Bandai-Emotion logos on the back. The SECOND clue was that the company in question has an email address @YAHOO.COM(non-functional by the way). That and the fact they pop up their little logo on screen every 10 minutes, ironically enough to keep their bootleg from being bootlegged. The subs are also about 15 frames off in the timing.
Also, no real collection would feature 2 movies on a single layer disc.
You should go back to this store and inform them this is bootleg product. If they refuse to remove it, I'm sure Disney would LOVE to have a word with them.
Bottom line: If it's on Ebay from an Asian seller,it's anime and it's Region 0 with English subs, it's a bootleg

After writing in to Ghiblink and passing to them a link to this discussion here, I got a further, more detailed response from the guys at Nausicaa.net/Ghiblink. I think their response contains some very common-sense stuff, so I'm passing it on (the bold-face emphasis is added by myself) and bowing out of the discussion; I will DEFINATELY not be buying this set! This is written to me by "Lawrence" at Ghiblink:

    Quote:

I called up Scarecrow and the employee told me that they ordered them from China directly from ACI. As a backup for the legitimacy, he mentioned that ACI also released "Avalon".[1]
So basically it's an impasse, I can't find a "smoking gun" to disprove the set. However, the following details put the set seriously into bootleg territory:
    -From China
    -Region 0
    -Multiple films on a disc
-Not found at any reputable retailer ("Avalon" is at CD Japan[2] and ToykoPop[3]. Though after all this searching, I'm not sure if ACI is involved with "Avalon".)
Scarecrow is a great store, but this quote from their website is hardly encouraging:
"Our first batch of import Anime DVDs has finally arrived. Many of these great shows have never even been seen in the USA. Finally - All of these DVDs are region free and in Japanese with optional English subtitles. Amazing selection - come in and check the previous few weeks of titles."[4]
Consider this: The official DVD set hasn't been released in Japan, why would Tokuma/Studio Ghibli be willing to license _all films_ and with no region-coding to boot?

I'll wait for the Japanese releases. I just got Kiki's Delivery service, and I'll be picking up Totoro soon. Mononoke is the next one out after that (but I already have the R1). High quality transfer and english subs.
