GS: We all know that the focus is on Doom III's single-player component, but tell us what the current multiplayer plans are and where they stand right now.

TW: Our focus hasn't changed--we're putting all our resources into developing an unbelievable single-player experience. We will, however, include a multiplayer component that includes game types like deathmatch and last man standing. There is nothing more visceral than competing against another human player, particularly in a first-person game. However, this experience is going to be very different from something like Quake III Arena. Doom III multiplayer is incredibly intense, and the light and shadows play a much bigger role in the gameplay. Never before in a multiplayer game have players had to worry about their shadow and whether or not it has revealed their position, or been able to shoot out lights so they can hide in the darkness. This alone adds a level of reality, depth, and atmosphere that is again going to redefine expectations about how a multiplayer game should look and feel.

Oh my god...that is really cool. So what are the vegas odds that this game will be out this year?

You gotta be kidding me! In-game shots!? Unbelievable. Can't wait.

Curious to see what compromises will be made to bring this to the XBox - Resolution? Texture depth?

This game is a major reason why I've passed up on a upgrade (had my eye on a 2500+ Barton and a gig of PC3200) but I'm not going to wait until the fall, see how the Athlon 64's are doing (released in September) and see if I can pick up a little financial aid because the new semester starts :b

OMFG!! I can't wait until this hits the xbox(assuming it maintains most of its visual fidelity). In 5.1 this game is gonna scare the crap out of me just as the original Doom did way back when. :emoji_thumbsup:

Ugg, I sure hope they make it possible to see while playing. I HATE not being able to see a fricken thing in a game. "we have 10 billion polys going on the screen at once! Too bad you still can't see a fucking thing though...trust me, its awesome, you just have to imagine its there in the dark somewhere"

That shot ran in CGW about two or three months ago (spread over two pages, no less). I don't know where Gamespot gets off calling it an "exclusive new screenshot" (I guess they mean web exclusive). The interview has lots of interesting info though.

Resolution most likely. It'll probably only be offered in 480p for the Xbox, but Carmack says it will retain all the visual fidelity of the PC version and since he wrote the engine he probably knows what he's talking about ;)

I would prefer it on the Xbox for a few reasons:

-My 50" Toshiba 16:9 hdtv ;)
-5.1 sound
-I don't know if my computer will be powerful enough to run it...AthlonXP 1800+, 1280MB ram, GF4 Ti4200 128MB

Carmack also said it would run great on a GeForce 3 when they started developing it.
Carmack says a lot of things.
I'll believe it when I see it.

URT2k3 looks great on the Xbox 16x9 480p but compared to the PC, it doesn't come close.

Personally I like games that use shadow effectively.

But, in multiplayer I think it could be a bad thing. you will have players that just crank up thier brightness to be able to see more than was intended.

I think the Xbox version of this game will be inferior to the PC. The XBox hardware is just much less capable than a high-end PC. That combined with low resolution (unless it somehow manages 1080i on xbox), will probably make it look quite a bit worse on the Xbox.

I will be getting the PC version, unless the Xbox version is 1080i or has added content.

It's not like Carmack is going to come out and say, "Trust me -- you want the PC version. The X-box version will be a watered down port."

No developer is going to potentially ruin a sale, but I just can't imagine that an X-box version would even be close. Even if they included Live support, there's going to be compromises made.
