I'm in the process of building a ht and was wondering what the best complete system I could piece together for $6000. Room construction is not an issue, only the components. I appreciate any input or suggestions.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

Well, I'll take a stab at this:

    TV: Toshiba 65x81 - about $2,500

DVD: Toshiba Progressive scan unit: $300

    Receiver: Yamaha Rx800 ~ $700

    Vcr: JVC 4900U -SVhs: $250

Dss: Dish Network PVR501 - $100 for new subscribers (Once you get used to this, you may not ever use your VCR again).

Speaker wire: Home Depot 12 ga - $0.50/ft

    SVideo cables: WickedCables.com or CableSolutions.com

Speakers: Definitive Technology bipolars for the front. (The 2006/2004/2002's all are good. The center should be the CLR2002 - $600, the rears - anything).

Misc: BetterCables.com component cable for the DVD player: $120

Radio Shack Analog SPL meter: $40

    Avia DVD setup/test disk: $40

Case of Negro Modello beer for the hookup party: $24

Note: You can shuffle the DefTech tower models up/down to fit the budget.

Another well recommended speaker system is one of the Paradigm offerings. When I sent friends to a local store just to listen to them, they both walked out with a system.

(Tastes in speakers are like tastes in ice cream. What I prefer may not be your favorite.)

Good Luck and let us know what you audition/decide on.

Thanks. I appreciate the info. I will take your suggestions into consideration. How about a little smaller RPTV--somewhere around 55"? Widescreen of course.

I think Toshiba has a 45Hx81, 55Hx81 and 65Hx81 models with the first number being the screen size.

For a year or so these Toshiba units were considered one of the better HD TV's and better values. There are entire web sites devoted to tweaking & adjusting these units. (Just dont buy from Best Buy - recent horror stories).

There IS a TV that a salesman was pushing as being "better" than the Toshiba's for Sat/DSS watching. This is the new Sony XBR units, but they run about $4500.

The "King" of the HDTV's are the Pioneer Elite 420/520/620. But these start at about $5000.

Post questions on the "Display Devices" fourm for more suggestions/opinions.

Sounds like the Toshiba 57HX81 is just what the doctor ordered here.

    Here's another option:

    Toshiba 57H81 - $2,200

    B&W 600 Series speakers (602S2 mains/surrounds, LCR6 center) - $1,600

    Denon 3802 receiver -- $900

    SVS subwoofer -- $600

    Panasonic RP-91 DVD player -- $500

Total $5,800. This leaves a little money left over for cables.
