I decided to rewatch Jaws 3D this morning since I have a lot of time on my hands. Because the 3D lens spacing numbers are the same for Jaws 3D and Amityville 3D I went ahead and screened Amityville again. Enough 3D for one day!!! Tomorrow I'm thinking about Captain America in 3D. I'll have to reset the lens but no worry.....takes only about 10 minutes to do that.

Update: nevermind,I read the previous posting on the thread. I see that you are working with actual film. Next time Ill read more before I post. Was just going delete the post but don't think there's a way.
Can you tell me more about what you mean by reset the lens? Do I need to be doing that for each movie? How do I find the lens settings for movies?

Depending on the 3D title, the correct lens spacing must be followed. The older 3D titles have several different settings that require you to reset the lens using a test loop for that specific spacing number. All of the newer 3D titles (How To Train Your Dragon, Final Destination 5, etc, etc) all use the same number. Bottom line, to run 35mm 3D movies you must have the proper lens and you must have the proper test loops that enable you to "reset" the lens to the correct spacing number for the title you wish to screen. Once you have the things you need, you learn quickly how to adjust the lens for a good 3D presentation.
Hope this answers your question. See the attached pictures for the different spacing numbers. Note: all of the newer titles (those movies released after 2005) use the Stereovision #.374. View attachment 71268 View attachment 71269 View attachment 71269 View attachment 71269

Thanks for the response! How do converted to digital titles work. I see The Bubble was not in the now standard .374 but was .380. Screenshot_20200416-130551.png

To my knowledge The Bubble was never released as an over/under 3D print. Remember the system I'm talking about is confined to the over/under single stripe 35mm print and not the dual strip 50's projection system.

Wow!! You're correct Peter. My bad. I've never seen a print nor do I know any collector who has one. Regardless it would be faded to beet red now. That doesn't hurt the 3D effects but the red causes eye strain for me.

EDIT: I just found The Bubble on my list. Look at page two under "Fantastic Invasion"!!!!

Today has been a busy day!!
I decided to convert a Schneider Technicolor 3D lens which was made and sold when digital projection started finding it's way into theatres. Technicolor decided to make available a single strip, over/under 3D 35mm film for those theatre owners who either didn't want to convert to expensive digital projectors or thought the conversion would never be finished!!
So Technicolor contracted with Schneider Optical Company (a German corp) to make a new 3D lens much advanced over the older Sirius 3D lens. Technicolor gave the theatre operator the option of either leasing the lens on a monthly basis or purchasing outright. This new model of showing 3D movies still in 35mm lasted only several years and digital projection finally took over in earnest. Technicolor apparently didn't ask for the leased lens to be shipped back so many found their way to Ebay!! There's at least 6 of the lens up on Ebay right now ranging in price from several hundred bucks to over $3,500. If I remember correctly they sold new for $7,000. These lens were Circular polarized and required a silver screen and "Real D" 3D glasses.
To make a long story short, I converted my older Sirius lens to Dolby 3D using Dolby filters many months ago. Today I converted the Technicolor lens over to the Dolby vesion. Dolby 3D uses a white screen and to this day is the better of the 3D systems you'll find in theatres. Just cutting and replacing the filters took a half a day and find tuning the focus and tweeting took the rest of the day.
I've run several test reels and the 3D looks fantastic so the work was worth it.
You can see by the pictures the Technicolor lens is much smaller than the older Sirius version and also has more optical glass which makes a better picture. The old 'Sirius lens as been retired!!

Just scored my first Tarantino film in 35mm this morning. FROM DUSK 'TIL DAWN.
I love this movie and have been looking for a print for months. This one is coming from near London. 35mm/1:85 SDDS...Dolby Digital. No DTS on this film!!

Picked up another title I've been looking for....DRIVE ANGRY. This is a 3D 35mm print.
1:85 (3D) Dolby Digital, DTS & SDDS. This one was shot in 3D.

As luck would have it, the first film I've bought that had only a SDDS digital track (no DTS or Dolby Digital) has proven to have issues with the SDDS track. We screened the 35mm print for the first time last night and had audio dropout issues during the last half of the movie. I haven't had time to examine the tract to see if it's scratched, dirty or both but I'll get to that chore today. Other than a compromised audio track the print is pristine in appearance and sounds great when switching to Dolby SR. This is one I might have to "live" with! From Dusk Till Dawn is a title I've been wanting for a long time. I'm not unhappy.

That should be fun.
I have a collector friend up in Canada who has a 2D print of this title. He said it was fun to watch in 2D so I can imagine what we're in store for with a 3D screening. Print will be here Thursday.

It's a fun, silly, bloody, completely over-the-top comic book movie. And, of course, Amber Heard. I have the BR and have only seen it in 2D, but it's jam packed with 3D stuff.

You were right John. It was action packed and lots of GREAT 3D shots.
Once again, you can't believe but about half of IMDB when it comes to technical details about a movie. IMDB list Drive Angry as having Dolby Digital, DTS and SDDS. NOT SO.
Although the print had the typical dual outside edge green track where the SDDS is printed, the tracks were empty!! Thank goodness for DTS.

I need to watch it with my nice new 4K monitor. My old plasma just wasn’t holding up picture wise and it’s been enjoyable seeing how much monitor tech has improved recently.

Today was "tune-up" day. I hired a highly qualified audio/amplifier technician to tune up the A and B chain in our home theatre. The last time this was done was 4 years ago by a specialist from Boston Light and Sound. There has been equipment changes since then and the room just wasn't sounding as fit as it use to. After about two hours I could really hear a huge difference in the sound. The tech completely reset the room EQ and I heard sounds I'd never heard before. It was worth the $$ to have it tuned up and I'm very happy with the results. The three digital formats are balanced to perfection.
