June 16th Updates have been posted.

29 new entries
5 Revised release dates.

Grey Gardens 2-disc SE, which I listed last week as an August 22nd release (based on info at Movies Unlimited), has been changed back to TBA since that date now seems unlikely and hasn't been confirmed by Criterion.

Have a nice weekend.

Lists have been updated as of July 1st.

30 new listings.

Not much of note this week in Region 1 but, over in the UK, three new Buñuel releases are in the works:

The Great Madcap / El Gran Calavera (1949) [? / R2 PAL UK] 23-Oct-2006
Ascent To Heaven (Mexican Bus Ride) / Subida al cielo (1952) [? / R2 PAL UK] 23-Oct-2006
Nazarin / Nazarín (1959) [? / R2 PAL UK] 25-Sep-2006

I'm not sure who the distributor will be, but I'll assume it's Arrow, since they're also releasing Viridiana and The Exterminating Angel.

In other R2 news, Universal will be releasing a monster 18-disc Marlene Dietrich Collection (£150 suggested retail) on August 14th. Titles to be announced, but expected to include: Angel, Blonde Venus, Desire, Destry Rides Again, The Devil Is A Woman, Dishonored, The Flame Of New Orleans, Follow The Boys, A Foreign Affair, Golden Earrings, Morocco, Pittsburgh, The Scarlet Empress, Seven Sinners, Shanghai Express, The Song Of Songs, The Spoilers, and Touch Of Evil.

Keep those cards and letters coming...

Greetings. July 7th updates are posted.

26 new listings
3 revised release dates

Again, very little on the R1 front (except maybe a third Svankmajer shorts collection and the Aussie western, The Proposition).

There is some more good upcoming stuff Down Under: Branagh's Henry V remastered; some recent Rivette; and a new La Règle du jeu.

From the UK comes a new release of Kusturica's Underground and Rian Johnson's indie Brick, plus Tartan is re-releasing Wong Kar-Wai's As Tears Go By and Days of Being Wild with the original Cantonese soundtracks (if you recall, they released these back in June with Mandarin tracks only).

Criterion has only hinted that it's coming this fall. Since the September releases are set, we're looking at either October or November for Véronique. Expect Criterion to announce their October lineup within the next couple of weeks

Thanks, I missed that announcement. Probably a (temporary) victim of MGM's shift from Sony to Fox as its distributor.

July 28th Update has been posted.

29 new listings
4 revised release dates

Also, based upon suggestions from several readers, I have reformatted List A so it more closely resembles the list as Donald Brown used to maintain it (e.g., Region 1 releases are no longer listed separately from other regions; releases are grouped by week of release rather than day of release). If there's a strong preference for the previous format, I can go back to it easily; otherwise, it will likely stay as is).

As always, comments and suggestions are welcomed (as is DVD release news I may have missed).

Thanks.

Culled from the Criterion Forum, coming January in the MoC range:

SHOAH
(Claude Lanzmann, 1985)
France • 550 minutes • 1.33:1 OAR
MoC #38 — January 2007

Shoah is Claude Lanzmann’s landmark documentary meditation on the Holocaust. Assembled from footage shot by the filmmaker across the 1970s and ‘80s, Lanzmann’s film investigates the genocide at the level of experience: the geographical layout of the camps and the ghettos; the daily routines of imprisonment; the inexorable trauma of humiliation, punishment, extermination. Shoah builds gradually across its nine-and-a-half hours into a monumental portrait of shame and of grief, locating within the present a direct line to the horrors of the past. It is one of the most powerful films ever made.

Absent from the film is any photographic chronicle, any film footage, taken at the time the Holocaust occurred. There is only Lanzmann and his crew, shooting in private spaces and now-dormant zones of eradication to extract testimony from a series of survivors, witnesses, and oppressors alike. Through his relentless manner of questioning (aided on occasion by hidden camera), Lanzmann is able to coax out material of unparalleled emotional truth that at one moment constitutes precious oral history, and at another, withering indictment.

Shoah (the title is a common designation for the Holocaust, and a Hebrew word that can be translated as “Catastrophe” or “Annihilation”) arrived as the first of Lanzmann’s films which analyse the death camps’ effects on single lives and the world at large. Taken together or apart, they represent an aesthetic achievement in line with Alain Resnais’s Night and Fog and Jean-Luc Godard’s Histoire(s) du cinéma — an admixture of inquiry, rage, and mourning expressed with impeccable dignity and intelligence. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present, for the first time on DVD in the UK, Claude Lanzmann’s 550-minute masterpiece in a four-disc set.

SPECIAL FEATURES – TBA!

Plus...

Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror - Expect a 2 x DVD in 2007, according to MoC's recent catalogue.

Look out too for, among others, TABU: A STORY OF THE SOUTH SEAS (F. W. Murnau, 1931), & THE BLUE ANGEL (Josef von Sternberg, 1930)

BTW, that catalogue, in PDF form, is here

Just a quick post to say that the UK is getting treated to some newly remastered Seijun Suzuki films in 2007 from a company called Yume Pictures. As well as freshly remasted editions of Tokyo Drifter and Branded to Kill, there will also be releases of Fighting Elergy, Flowers & the Angry Waves, and Fighting Delinquents. The same company has some more Yasuzo Masamura titles coming too.

They are also doing a wave of Bunuel's mexican work: Nazarin gets a fresh transfer (although whether it is better than the Mexican disc remains to be seen), Great Madcap gets a DVD release and Ascent to Heaven is the same source as the Mexican disc. Given the lack of Bunuel releases lately, September is starting to look great - these plus Exterminating Angel!

Other exciting UK stuff:

Julio Medem's Tierra gets a UK release, hopefully bettering the appalling US release and equalling the pretty good (but now sadly OOP) Spanish release. It comes as part of a Medem boxset from Tartan, although they haven't licensed any of the material from the 3 DVD Spanish Basque Ball set. Maybe they might even remaster Lovers of the Arctic Circle, but maybe I am hoping for too much!

Tartan are also doing a huge Bergman boxset, which is everything they have released of his up to now plus 2 other films (which may or may not be released seperately). It's pricey - £300 at least at RRP.

The release window is getting really short over here - art house movies are hitting DVDs in 3 months or so, some even quicker.

Fantoma is finally releasing Vol. 1 of the Kenneth Anger films! They announced this 4 or 5 years ago, and I had pretty much given up hope that it would actually happen.
