I thought these were all going to released across all regions at the same time. I know the first batch are coming to R1 on July 1st and I think I'm right in thinking The Great Dictator is already available in France but when are they coming to the UK ?

I fear the release may be delayed in Britain because the National Film Theatre seem to have a big Chaplin season planned for the summer and autumn which will also tour the country. Will a DVD release coincide with this I wonder or follow it ?

Those of us anxious to get hold of the silent version of The Gold Rush may have go down the Region 1 route.

Yes but reading the NFT's website it looks like us in the UK will have to wait till September at the earliest.

It looks like my suspicions were correct. In another thread in Home Theatre Software Forum someone has posted that the Chaplin discs are due on September 22nd although on the bright side all 10 titles are earmarked for release on that day. It will be interesting to see how the extras compare to Region 1.

It seems I got it slightly wrong earlier. I wonder if the French are getting two disc sets because it doesn't look like we Brits are. Looking at play.com they have the Region 1 boxset of 2 disc sets of The Gold Rush, the Great Dictator, Modern Times and Limelight but the Region 2 editions are up for pre-order as well but with some interesting differences.

As I said before on the bright side we are getting all of these on September 22nd :

The Kid
The Gold Rush
The Circus
City Lights
Modern Times
The Great Dictator
Monsieur Verdoux
Limelight
A King In New York / A Woman of Paris

Strangely the First National shorts are nowhere to be seen. Are we getting those at all ?

These can all be bought individually or in a 4 disc boxset
(with The Gold Rush, The Kid, Modern Times, the Great Dictator : different titles to Region 1 !)or a 8 disc set
(I'm thinking they mean a 10 disc set as they miss out The Gold Rush) with the new Richard Schickel documentary (pity you can't buy that on its own, that's sure to infuriate some who already have some of the Image DVDs). Now here is the big BUT although you'll probably have worked it out by now : these will only (according to Play) be available on single discs. Are we Brits being short-changed again ? This begs the obvious question : will these discs have all or any of the extras of their region 1 counterparts ( no mention of extras on the play website)? Will we for instance get both versions of The Gold Rush ?

When I found out that we were getting all the Chaplin DVDs before Region 1 I was quite pleased at first but that's not much good if these are cut down incomplete versions while the Americans get all the bells and whistles early next year. Can anyone shed some light on this ?

I wasn't in such a rush to get these but if what I suspect about the extras is true I'll be ordering the Region 1 boxset. As Oscar says hooray for Multi-Region players (by the way Oscar I live just down the road from Glasgow)and DVD producers wonder why we import so many discs from the States.

FYI, the French SE DVD (should) have ENG subtitles on all special features... It's the case on The Dictator, I'll check on the others as soon as they arrive...

Cheers,

Vincent
