Umm. Blu-ray is a STORAGE format. Not a HD format per se. It happens to have enough space and datarate for HD material.

So storing large amounts of SD material on a single disc is appealing to many companies.

Correct.

Personally I'd *love* to have season sets of SD material on a single disc for full-access to all episodes. I doubt I'd buy any of my SD sets over again... but for new sets that I have yet to purchase... that would be cool.

for storing SD material on BluRay's physical spex, i hope they don't use straight up MPEG2. use AVC or VC-1. that way you can fit a ton more SD-DVD in there.

Agreed. That would improve PQ as well by avoiding typical MPEG-2 realted artifacts like edge ringing and mosquito noise.

I'd buy SD shows again if they added more extras (good ones) and, where necessary, provided unedited episodes where cut ones had been before (Sony, Lion's Gate, and now Warner, this means you!).

What is the standard bit rate for SD on VC-1 anyway?

Would the Blu-ray spec allow for a small upgrade compared to the SD discs? Such as 570p versus 480p?

"Umm"...
HD DVD can do that!
And do it better today & yesterday, with advanced codec & more space!!!

So, again, what was your point of posting on the HD software forum (on the subject of "flipping") about a potential SD release?
