My 2000 machine can see my XP shares but not the other way around. Both can ping each other. Do I really have to reconfig my 2000 networking using the XP CD??

What permissions do you have set on the shares on the XP box?

I set up a share called c at the root of C:. I'm pretty sure I set everyone to full. If permissions trouble wouldn't I just get access denied when I tried to open the share?

I would have thought so, Keith.

I presume both machines are in the same Workgroup?

When you open your network places, can you see the 2000 machine at all?

They may not be in the same workgroup. I'll have to check that tonight. No, I can't see the 2000 machine at all from XP. I even tried a net use command and it failed with an error. Don't remember the error, it was late.

Keith, that sounds like a Workgroup problem.

Try opening a window and putting \computernamehere in the location bar, see what it says.

I am not exactly sure but I do remember when I configured my network and file sharing that a computer with win2000 can see an XP computer but an XP computer can not see a win2000 computer. I know that I am oversimplifying things. I will look it up and post back. By the way I have two XP machines networked and I think that is the best way to go.

Thanks everyone. I'll look at the workgroup settings tonight.
Diallo, that sounds like what I'm seeing. Let me know if you find more info. This is a temporary setup while I transfer, reload, configure, etc. Later the 2k machine goes away.

This link may help to solve your problem if you are running XP Pro. Also, I am pretty sure that you have to use the XP cd to configure your network on the 2000 machine. The info that you are looking for is about 60 percent down the page.

    good luck.

Well, Rob had it right. Once both machines were in the same workgroup, I could browse to the share. I had to supply an account and password to access the share. Thanks to everyone who helped.
