This is a first for me. I rented Armageddon, and the disc said Divx on it, when I put it in, it gave me a message about needing a Divx compatible player, along with an 800 number to call. I emailed Netflix to let them know, it seems someone along the way swapped their old unplayable Divx Armageddon, for a real copy. Has anyone else encountered Divx discs with rentals?

That's hilarious! Was it at least the widescreen version? I have the widescreen Armageddon as part of my 15-disc DIVX collection, bought when the stores were blowing 'em out. It sits next to "Deep Impact" (widescreen edition) which is essentially the same movie- both discs have a chapter titled "Drawing Straws".
I heard that some Mala Vista DVDs ended up having the DIVX versions in the cases around late 1998 too.

It shouldn't be too hard to backtrack and find out who the culprit was, the last person who rented it is the most likely suspect I would think.
