I'm looking for some DVD's that either sound awesome, or look awesome. I'm getting a DVD player for Christmas and would like to run it through some paces with some good movies that will test its ability and that kick ass. Can you recommend some without going into my setup or the DVD player. Thanks.

You can't go wrong with any of the Superbit titles from Columbia Tristar for exceptional audio and video quality

Well, it does help to know whether or not you have 5.1 surround, but here goes off the top of my head

Planet of the Apes(2001)

The Matrix

Gladiator

Star Wars-Episode 1:The Phantom Menace

Galaxy Quest

Classic:

Citizen Kane

Dr. Zhivago

Those are some pretty good sock-knockers

In my opinion Cast Away has overall exceptional video and audio, especially the DTS track, which has an amazingly immersive sound field!

Welcome to HTF, Allen.

this topic comes up about every month or so. Don't know if e switch to the new software has affected the archives for searching - but you could try "recommended DVDs" or "demo DVDs" and find many of the past recommendations that still hold up.

My off-the-top-of-my-head list:

Toy Story 2

Mask of Zorro

The Mummy

Red Violin

U-571

The Talented Mr. Ripley

Thomas Crown Affair ('99 version)

Vertigo

Shrek

Rush Hour 1 & 2

I second Pitch Black and another "off beaten path" one is Julie Taymor's Titus, incredible transfer and sound. I am surprised that nobody mention Jurassic Park DTS.
