A friend and her husband are splurging a but this Christmas, getting a new TV, DVD player, DirecTV/TiVo subscription, and some DVDs.

I'm likely to recommend the Panasonic RP-56 (finding out more in a separate thread). They've got some deal on a DirecTiVo, which leaves the TV.

She wants to stay under $1000, and has been tempted by some in the range of $650 or so.

Her only requirement is 32" though she'd like component in and progressive scan capability. I'm recommending she also try to get a flat screen and 16:9 mode (is this only on Sony TVs?).

Are there TVs which match these requirements for under $1000 and if so, which ones? I've looked over many Sony TVs, but the model numbers are driving me batty.

    Thanks,

    Tim H.

KV-32FS16 or FS17 are the lower 32" WEGAs - under $1K Speakers on the bottom.

KV-32FV26 or FV27 are the higher 32" WEGAs. - right about or just above $1K. Speakers on the sides (actually rear), with slightly more power for them.

XBR anything is well out of that price range.

Given the information provided, which I think I understand all of, let me change the request for information...

I'd like recommendations for a 32" TV under $1000. The preference would be for as many of the following features as possible, though clearly having all of them isn't possible.

    In approximate order of preference:

    - flat screen

    - 16:9 mode

    - component in

    - progressive scan

    Thank you again, in advance.

Samsung has a 27" hdtv for $850 at Best Buy. If the criteria is changed to 27" under $1K, is this a better set for viewing dvd and cable than the SDTV's mentioned which might justify the extra cost?
