    Ok, here's the deal:

I have some R2 discs that I would -love- to watch that I of course, would need an R2 or region-free player to play, that would support PAL output.. any recommendations?

Cambridge Audio 540D does PAL to NTSC pretty flawlessly and mine was region free right out of the box, no hacks needed. It's also an excellent CD player, FWIW.

The Toshiba 4900 is a pretty solid player overall and performs flawless PAL-NTSC conversion. It's semi-region-free out of the box - you have to go into the set-up menu and switch regions. There's also a simple hack that's pretty easy to find that unlocks it and makes it completely region-free.

As an aside, if you have access to the Asian models, most are region-free and are multi-system out of the box -- just about every DVD player sold here in Singapore is region-free, multi-system (no conversion though, but TVs are multi-system too so we don't need converters).
