Im a newbie to building subs and I have a few concerns:

How would a sonotube(ported) with a shiva driver and 250W amp compare to already built subs, such as the Paradigm PDR12?

How would it compare to a square box?

How does the quickness or response of a 4ft^3 enclosure compare to a 5ft^3 enclosure (ported)?

Absolutely no comparison. A Shiva in a 110-140L enclosure tuned in the 18-22hz range would be better compared to a PW2200. In fact I would put my money on a Shiva in that allignment easily besting the PW2200 in both sound quality and output.

There is no difference between a box and tube. The only important factor is the net volume. Whether that volume is a cylinder or a box is irrelavent.

As for the 4 or 5 ft^3 question. The tuning frequency will also affect this. But a 4ft^3 enclosure tuned to 20hz would be about half way between a SBB4 and an EBS allignment. 5ft^3 tuned to 18hz would be an EBS allignment. The 4ft^3 would have a little more punch, but I think the 5ft^3 would be slightly tighter. The difference will more than likely be very subtle though.
